The geological classification of specific rock formations in the American Southwest and on the Martian surface as purely natural phenomena is increasingly subject to scrutiny. This article examines the hypothesis that the Navajo Sandstone formations—historically categorized as eolian sedimentary structures—and their morphological counterparts on Mars may be anthropogenic or artificial in origin. By analyzing the rarity of these structures on Earth compared to their ubiquity on Mars, this study challenges the “natural process” paradigm, suggesting that the lack of widespread terrestrial equivalents disproves the likelihood of spontaneous natural formation.

A fundamental principle of geology is that if a specific set of environmental conditions produces a rock formation on one terrestrial planet, similar conditions should produce comparable results elsewhere. The Martian surface is characterized by omnipresent, complex lithic structures that are frequently attributed to ancient aqueous or volcanic activity. However, if these structures were the result of natural forces occurring over four billion years, they should be distributed widely across Earth’s geological record.

The fact remains that Earth does not widely exhibit these specific physical structures in either the ancient or recent past. The Navajo Sandstone of the American Southwest stands as a rare exception. If the formation of such rocks were a standard byproduct of planetary evolution, their presence on Earth would be a global rule rather than a localized exception.

If these formations were naturally occurring, they would not be “missing” from the majority of Earth’s surface. The Navajo Sandstone serves as a critical terrestrial analog that does not support the theory of Martian naturalism, but rather reinforces the possibility of widespread anthropogenic or artificial lithification across the solar system.
