The oreodont Merychyus enters the LRT basal to hippos + desmostylians and mysticetes
Merychyus major
(Leidy 1858, Morgan et al 2009) was a North American Miocene herbivore with a retracted naris, tusk-like canine teeth, heavy body, long tail, short feet, and four-toed hooves. In the large reptile tree (LRT, 2340 taxa) Merychyus nests basal to hippos + desmostylians + mysticetes, close to the smaller Agriochoerus antiquus.
Morgan et al 2009,
considered Merychyus an oreodont without further attempts to understand the broader interrelationships, other than calling it ‘tapir-like’. If not for this rather recent (2009) recovery of an excellent skull and partial post-crania, not much has been published on this taxon.
This appears to be a novel hypothesis of interrelationships.
