Non-Geological Polygonal Microstructures on Mars: Integrated Morphological Evidence for Artificial Engineering

Abstract

Recent rover observations have documented thousands of polygonal structures on the Martian surface. While these features are typically interpreted as products of natural geological processes, detailed morphological analysis reveals multiple characteristics that challenge this interpretation. These include centimeter-scale polygonal units exhibiting layered internal structure, absence of inter-polygonal cracking, systematic geometric regularity, and the presence of sub-millimeter square, rectangular, and circular microstructures with dark centers. Additionally, these polygons occur in organized sloping tiers and display biomimetic features resembling vessel elements. Crucially, no terrestrial analog reproduces the full combination of these features at comparable scales. This study synthesizes these observations and argues that the structures are best explained as artificially engineered systems rather than natural geological formations.

Polygonal terrains on Mars have been widely reported, including observations by NASA describing “thousands of honeycomb-shaped polygons.” Such formations are generally attributed to:

• desiccation cracking

• thermal contraction

• freeze–thaw processes

However, these natural mechanisms produce:

• irregular polygonal networks

• open crack boundaries

• variable geometry

The structures documented here diverge significantly from these expectations and instead exhibit a combination of features that collectively challenge geological explanations.

The polygons occur in sloping tiers, suggesting:

Most critically: No terrestrial analog reproduces this complete feature set.

Therefore: The most consistent interpretation is that these structures are

artificially engineered systems rather than natural geological formations.

If one single argument must be identified as decisive:  The complete absence of any Earth analog that reproduces the full multi-scale, multi-geometry, crack-free, layered system is the strongest evidence that these Martian polygons are man-made rather than natural.
