Beneath Notre Dame: 'Dig of the Century' Unearths 1,700 Years of Paris

Paris has long been a city built on its own past, but rarely has that truth been made quite so literal as it is today beneath the forecourt of Notre Dame Cathedral. An extraordinary archaeological excavation, now underway just four meters below the feet of visiting tourists, is peeling back layer after layer of Parisian history, reaching all the way down to the era of Roman Lutetia some two thousand years ago. French media have taken to calling it the “dig of the century,” and the finds emerging from the earth are doing little to discourage that label.
The excavation owes its existence to two separate events: the catastrophic fire of 2019 that destroyed the cathedral’s medieval spire, and the city of Paris’s subsequent decision to redesign the bare, sun-scorched plaza before the cathedral’s facade. With Notre Dame having triumphantly reopened in late 2024, the municipality now plans to plant 160 trees and introduce a cooling film of water across the square’s stone surface. French law requires that the ground be thoroughly examined by archaeologists before any construction begins — a requirement that has turned a landscaping project into one of the most significant urban digs in recent memory.
