Medieval Vilnius Unveiled: Analysis Reveals Diverse Migrants in Europe's Last Pagan State

A medieval cemetery in Lithuania is transforming historians’ understanding of the early history of Vilnius. A recent isotope study has revealed that some of the city’s first Christians journeyed from hundreds of kilometers away, demonstrating that Europe’s last pagan state already boasted a remarkably diverse population long before Catholicism was officially adopted as the state religion in AD 1387.
The investigation centered on a burial ground situated on Bokšto Street within Vilnius Old Town, where archaeologists unearthed Christian graves dating back to the late 13th and 14th centuries. These burials astonished researchers, given that Lithuania was still officially a pagan nation during much of this era. The groundbreaking findings were recently published in the journal Antiquity.
An international collaborative team meticulously examined the remains of 15 individuals interred at the site. They analyzed isotopes preserved within tooth enamel, dentine, and bone collagen. Because these biological tissues develop at distinct stages of life, they capture a detailed record of childhood origins, dietary habits, and later life changes — allowing scientists to trace where an individual spent their formative years and whether they migrated during their lifetime.
