1,800-Year-Old Statue of the Greek God of Healing Discovered at Aspendos
After nearly 1,800 years buried beneath the ruins of one of the ancient Mediterranean’s most impressive cities, a symbol of healing has emerged from the rubble of a collapsed gateway into the light. Archaeologists excavating Aspendos in southern Türkiye have uncovered a well-preserved group of marble statues depicting Asklepios, the Greek god of medicine and healing, alongside his son and assistant, Telesphoros. Standing approximately seven feet tall and dating to the late second century AD, the Roman-era sculpture offers new evidence for the importance of healing beliefs in the everyday religious and civic life of ancient Aspendos.
An Ancient Symbol of Healing Returns to Light
The discovery, recently announced by Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, was eagerly shared by Mehmet Nuri Ersoy on his social media account. Ersoy described the discovery as an exciting event that highlighted the importance of Aspendos and the archaeological work there.

Researchers unearthed the statue among the remains of the collapsed northern wing of the Monumental Gate, where Aspendos’ East Plaza opens into Theatre Street, one of the busiest and most visible corners of this ancient city.
