Ice Age Artists Turned Mammoth Tusk Growth Lines into Art
A collective of female figurines dating back 18,000 years which was discovered in Mizyn in the northern part of Ukraine shows that the artists of the Ice Age did not simply mammoth ivory into a form. According to new research the artists followed the natural lines inside the tusk and incorporated this into the design. The finding provides a rare opportunity to find evidence of artists’ intention in prehistoric work.
A material that became part of the design
This study, released in npj Heritage Science, investigated 18 Venus figurines recovered from the Mizyn site. Using high-resolution microscopy and 3D digital modeling, the group found ethno-geometric engravings that resemble Schreger and Owen patterns, or the natural structure of mammoth tusks. Apparently, the ivory carvers studied their raw material carefully before making the decision of where to cut!
The result is more than a technical detail. This indicates that mammoth ivory was not perceived as a nondescript resource, such as rock ready to be processed, but as something that possesses a clearly defined essence that has an impact on the creative process.
