NetDocuments’ Legal Context Graph: Giving Your Firm’s AI Some Actual Memory

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Many AI tools in a law firm start every conversation from scratch. Upload a contract, ask a question, get an answer. The tool forgets everything when the session ends. Then, the next lawyer who works the same matter starts the reconstruction all over again: who the parties are, what precedent applies, what the firm has already decided.

NetDocuments’ new Legal Context Graph aims to fix this bottleneck in legal AI. With full, secure access to a firm’s document repository, the AI-powered Legal Context Graph creates an always up-to-date understanding of each matter. Instead of AI tools deducing context from whatever a lawyer happens to upload, the Legal Context Graph draws on a structured map of how a firm’s matters, documents, people, and communications actually connect.

Understanding the Legal Context Graph

The Legal Context Graph continuously maps relationships across a firm’s document library, while respecting existing permissions and ethical walls. Here’s what that looks like in practice.

An associate inherits an unfamiliar matter, a merger between two companies with dozens of SEC filings and years of correspondence behind it. Instead of digging through folders, the associate opens the matter and immediately sees an AI-generated overview: a summary, the key parties, an activity timeline, and the prior work product the firm has built on similar deals. This matter overview is designed to surface in seconds what might otherwise take an associate days to piece together.

From there, the associate can ask the AI assistant a specific question: when was a Form S-4 signed, filed, and declared effective? Because the Legal Context Graph understands how the matter’s documents connect, the AI assistant pulls the signing date from the S-4 itself, corrects the filing date against a later 10-K/A that amended it, and locates the effective date, which might appear only once, buried in a subsequent quarterly report rather than in the registration statement where a lawyer would expect to find it. Search here works by meaning, not keyword, so the AI assistant matches concepts (signed, filed, effective) across documents instead of hunting for exact phrases.

Drop a new filing into the matter, and the rest of the matter’s context updates with it, rather than sitting isolated until someone manually reconciles it. Need precedent? The way the firm has handled a similar earn-out or indemnification clause before? That’s surfaced with one click instead of an email to whichever partner might remember.

The AI piece runs both inside NetDocuments and outside of it. Through NetDocuments’ MCP integration, external tools including ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Perplexity, and Google Gemini Enterprise, along with legal-specific platforms like Harvey and Legora, can pull from the same connected, permission-aware source of truth instead of whatever a lawyer pastes into a chat session window.

Timely AI-Powered Answers at Lower Cost

To quantify the value its Legal Context Graph brings to law firms, NetDocuments created the Legal Context Engineering Benchmark. NetDocuments ran the same AI agent against 300 questions across ten real legal matters (874 documents, roughly 60 million characters), once with only search and document retrieval, once with the context graph added.

The result: with the context graph, there was a 48% lower cost per correct answer on their frontier-tier test (GPT-5.6 Sol), driven mostly by a roughly 52% drop in tokens needed per answer. Additionally, if a firm “reinvests” part of the saved tokens in extended reasoning (e.g., moving from medium to high), then overall accuracy improves from a baseline 73.9 to 79.3 out of 100.

The Legal Context Graph buys budget headroom, though the scale depends on firm size. NetDocuments built its report model around a 2,000-person firm asking four million AI questions a year. The Legal Context Graph could save the firm approximately $940,000 annually if banked, or the 7% accuracy bump (at a smaller but still positive savings) if reinvested.

The savings scale roughly by headcount. Using NetDocuments’ 2,000-person firm test as the basis for our own estimate, a 10-person firm at the same usage rate NetDocuments highlights (eight AI questions per person per day, or roughly 20,000 questions a year), works out to about $4,700 in annual savings if banked, or about $1,850 in savings plus the same 7% accuracy bump if reinvested.

What This Means for Your Firm

The Legal Context Graph offers a glimpse at NetDocuments’ future innovation roadmap. The idea behind it, that AI tools work better when they inherit a firm’s actual institutional knowledge instead of rebuilding it every session, tracks with what firms actually experience: the associate who spends two days getting up to speed on a matter, the partner who can’t remember if the firm has handled something similar, the retiring partner who takes decades of judgment out the door with them.

The Legal Context Graph is currently in private preview with select customers. NetDocuments promises a broader rollout in the coming months.

The Legal Context Graph is a real architectural shift that solves an underlying problem (AI tools with no memory of a firm’s own work), and the merger-matter example above shows how it turns scattered filings into answers lawyers can rely on.
