Eminent astronomers worldwide appeal for the protection of the Paranal skies
Award-winning researchers from around the world have written an open letter to the Chilean Government appealing for the protection of the dark skies above ESO’s Paranal Observatory. The site, the best place for astronomy on the planet, is currently threatened by the large-scale industrial complex INNA, from the AES Andes company, which is planned to be located just a few kilometres from Paranal’s telescopes. Earlier this year, ESO conducted a detailed analysis on the impact of INNA, which showed that, at its planned location, the project would cause severe, irreversible damage to the Paranal’s dark skies and to the capacity of its facilities (such as the Very Large Telescope [VLT], the VLT Interferometer [VLTI], and the Extremely Large Telescope [ELT]) to operate as designed. The most significant impacts would be caused by light pollution and micro-vibrations.
The open letter, led by Nobel Prize winner Reinhard Genzel and signed by nearly 30 distinguished international astronomers, highlights the impact of INNA on a precious natural heritage of Chile and on one of the world’s most advanced astronomical observatories. But it also underscores how the damage would extend beyond the country’s borders, affecting the worldwide scientific community and humanity’s ability to understand the Universe.
Astronomical discoveries inspire wonder and curiosity, and the technological developments required in modern astronomy have had spin-off applications in areas from detectors to medicine. In Chile, astronomical research facilities have helped the country grow into an astronomical powerhouse, generating business opportunities, stimulating local development and training new generations. Above all, astronomy unites humanity, peacefully and collaboratively.
