Photos From an Art Exhibition: The Witch Burns
On Tuesday evening I attended the preview of The Witch Burns, an exhibition of art exploring witchcraft and womanhood. It’s in the wonderful Gothic settting of London’s Fitzrovia Chapel. Tin Man Art, which is hosting the exhibition, offered this background:
“To many, the witch figure has been associated with evil and persecution for almost 1,000 years. The counterview that gives rise to the witch as a symbol of power and feminine resistance has been growing for some time, helping us re-evaluate the role and representation of women and anyone who is deemed as ‘other’ in society.
“The works on display show how contemporary art is challenging and redefining concepts of power, persecution and piety. By inverting religious iconography and classic Christian imagery, modern feminist thought can be brought to the concept of the witch, deconstructing the myth into something different for the 21 st century.”
I loved the exhibition and the setting. Artists featured include Sara Berman, Radiohead and Chris Hopewell, Malene Hartmann-Rasmussen, Tim Noble, Sue Webster, Zach Toppin and Nooka Shepherd. All of the works delve into the topic of witches, female power and proto-religious imagery. It’s very much worth going to see and is on until Friday 12th July at Fitzroy Place, 2 Pearson Square, London W1T 3BF. Entry is free and it’s open from 11am to 6pm.

The photo at the top shows the chapel filled with guests on preview night. The one at the bottom shows one of a pair of glazed stoneware “wells”, by Nooka Shepherd – my favourite artist at the exhibition.
