Rounding the Year: What's Your Lammas Harvest?

Today is Lammas, a celebration of the harvest. Traditionally, that meant farmers bringing grain from the fields, and the rest of us probably going blackberrying. But the energy of this festival in the modern pagan Wheel of the Year can be about considering the results of all of our labours – how projects started months or even years ago have progressed. 

Today or over the weekend, spend a little time looking back at your plans and ambitions and what you have done towards completing them. Celebrate your achievements, but don’t be too harsh on yourself if you haven’t done as much as you wanted. Not all seeds grow into tall plants, and some plans get put on hold. It doesn’t mean you can’t try again, or pick up where you left off.

In the photo at the top you can see an embroidery project I started back when I was a teenager in the 1970s. I was intending to cover a cushioned storage box that doubled as a stool. I’d probably done about a quarter of it before I went away to university, leaving the unfinished crafting project at home. It sat at the back of a cupboard for absolutely decades. Every so often I’d come across it and not have the heart to throw it out, but not do any more work on it. This year I joined a crafting group where everyone brins along some sewing or knitting. I decided to continue my embroidery. The old footstool has long gone, but my plan now is to make a cushion cover. 

The embroidery isn’t even close to being finished, and I might only continue on it slowly, but better late than never. The fact that I’ve picked it up and added a few more stitches is part of my personal harvest that I’m honouring and celebrating this Lammas.
