OTL: More on the Ravens’ New Alternate Helmets
It’s been a fun week in Ravens news after just a couple of days, with the announcement made on Monday that the entire AFC North will feature in an in-season version of Hard Knocks:
For the first time since its debut, we’re coming to Hard Knocks

Watching the toughest division in football go through the season’s grind is going to be something else:

Ever since watching ESPN’s Bullies of Baltimore and it’s clips from the inaugural Hard Knocks, I’ve been waiting patiently for a reappearance of the purple and black uniforms on the HBO show. Or maybe, with Tuesday’s news, I should say purple and gold?
Many were already aware that the Ravens would unveil a new alternate helmet – similar to what the Bengals, Vikings, and others have recently done – this season. Not many knew what it would end up looking like, and we found that out yesterday:

At first, I honestly was somewhat torn on how to receive it. The details didn’t seem to have much thought behind them, and (what I’m really getting hung up on) the logo doesn’t feel like the right shape for a helmet. But when it’s on with the full jersey as depicted here, it is one pretty uniform:
The helmet by itself is cool, but when you pair it with the whole fit, it’s another level

Jamison Hensley notes that this is the third helmet in franchise history, but the first to have a purple shell:
The Ravens’ purple alternate helmet marks the third one in team history.
Their first helmet – the flying B logo – was used from 1996 to 1998.
The second one – the profile bird head – has been used since 1999. pic.twitter.com/xI9AHfnaZH

We’ve got a few more shots of the jersey and helmet combination here:

Overall, the helmet seems to be well-liked so far, with a number of positive reactions highlighted in The Final Drive:

For some, it reminds them of Baltimore trouncing the LA Rams in the purple color rush uniforms, which will still be the base jerseys next season:

That’s a nice memory to pair with these uniforms, but the kicker really is the all-purple helmet. NFL Fashion Advice hits the nail on the head here.
The Ravens are a Top 10 uniform team in my book. But I’ve never been a huge fan of the Color Rush uniform – the gold felt out of place and better used as a subtle accent.
The purple helmet addresses that problem with no shortage of gold elements that unlock gold elsewhere in… pic.twitter.com/i5irRf7iAV

I personally was thinking it, but didn’t have the artistic background to put it into words. The helmets bring out the rest of the jersey’s features, and these will be awesome to see live. As Ramey says, while the novelty is part of the fun with these, it’s disappointing they’ll only be worn once.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little disappointed that the Ravens are only wearing their new helmets for one game next season.

In other news, rookies will be reporting to mini camp on July 13th, with veterans reporting five days earlier than last year on July 20th:
Ravens rookies will report to training camp July 13, and veterans on July 20.
That’s early for the Ravens (and the NFL). Last year, vets didn’t report to Owings Mills for camp until July 25.

We’re just about one month away now. As we look toward those practices, and I look ahead at potential breakouts next season, there’s one name that just continues to stand out. Want to guess who it is?

Rashod Bateman is getting all the praise this offseason, and if I’m being honest, I’m getting slightly concerned about it. Is he being overhyped and therefore becoming primed for a flop season? Let’s hope not.
To end today’s Out to Lunch, though, check out the annual “What’s in the box?” video, which is always fun watch. Baltimore’s social media team was busy!
