NFL betting

The National Football League remains one of the most popular organizations in sports. In the United States, the NFL is number 1 in terms of popularity. It makes sense, as football is America’s favorite sport.

When a sport comes to be as popular as football, the bettors are not far behind. The NFL, naturally, gets a lot of attention at online sportsbooks. But, before you go looking for NFL odds to bet on, you should familiarize yourself with what betting on the NFL entails. In this article, we explain some basics.

What are Moneyline Odds?

The first thing you will have to learn is what moneyline odds are. For those who don’t know, online bookies tend to rely on three different odd types: fractional (UK), decimal (Europe), and moneyline (USA). For this article, we will focus on moneyline odds, as they are most popular in the USA.

Moneyline odds may seem complicated at first. But, once you get the hang of them, you’ll understand them easily. The favorite and underdog are represented by positive (+) and negative (-) numbers. The positive is the underdog, and the negative is the favorite. It is best explained with an example.

  • Team A: +300
  • Team B: -200

We see here that Team A is the underdog. The +300 indicates that if a bettor wagers $100, and Team A wins the match, the person who wagered will get an extra 300 on top of their original bet. So, it would be a total of $400.

As for Team B, we see that they are the favorite. The -200 indicates that one would need to bet $200 in order to win a prize of $100, should the favorite win. So, the total would therefore be $300, with a profit of $100 and a return on the initial $200. There are superb websites that explain the formula behind the odds quite thoroughly, should you wish to learn more.

Popular Prop Bets

Prop bets are the big thing in online sports betting nowadays. For those who don’t know, prop bets, short for proposition bets, are a particular bet type that gets participants to wager on specific outcomes during a match, unrelated to the winner of the game.

The NFL has a ton of prop betting options, that you will almost certainly find at any sportsbook. For example, “first team to score a touchdown” is a very popular option. However, where the NFL shines is in its, rather bizarre prop bet choices.

For example, bookies have often offered odds on incredibly strange events during the Super Bowl. Examples of this would be things like the color of the Gatorade, the half-time show performer’s choice of dress, and more.

These bizarre and strange prop bets can sometimes veer into the uncomfortable, and a lot of bookies have gotten some flak for their bet options. For example, a couple of years back, a notable bookie released prop bets on whether there will be a death due to a concussion during the Super Bowl. What is more bizarre is that there were quite a few people placing a wager on this prop
