OTL: Stanley, Humphrey Strong Early
It’s been an interesting week for Ravens Flock thus far. On one hand, Baltimore notched its first win of the season, looking impressive for three quarters in the process. On the other hand, they still sit at 1-2 overall and seemed to do everything they could to blow a 22-point lead late.
The Cowboys absolutely turned it on offensively in the 4th, and the referees didn’t do the Ravens any favors, but this trend of 4th quarter performances has to stop. With the 3-0 Buffalo Bills looming on Sunday Night Football, the Ravens cannot afford another repeat.

There may be no better game for a blackout than this week’s matchup. The Ravens have a chance to rewrite the early season storyline and bring back a sense of normalcy, while the Bills have a chance to stack statement wins and establish themselves as the class of the AFC.
Get your popcorn ready!
Looking back, though, a key play in Baltimore’s win over Dallas was the non-safety call on Dak Prescott. The Twitterverse never fails to draw comparisons, but it really made a strong one on Tuesday:
I want an explanation on why this was a safety but not one for the Ravens… pic.twitter.com/sAHG4DckFf

I, too, would like an explanation.
For 75% of the game, the Ravens defense was smothering, holding a talented Cowboys offense in check. The secondary has come under a lot of scrutiny recently, but I think the talk about Marlon Humphrey, in particular, is out of bounds.
Criticism may be a consequence of a big personality, but outside a few brief stints, Humphrey has been solid for Baltimore:

Playing just behind him, Ar’Darius Washington has matched Humphrey’s performances, and the two are making a strong duo early on:

Similarly, new addition S Eddie Jackson has been reliable in coverage:

It was nice to see – mostly – improved play from the back-end last week.
On the offensive side, things really were clicking for three quarters. First and foremost, despite facing Micah Parsons, the O-Line seemed to find a rhythm last Sunday. More specifically, Ronnie Stanley continued to show improvements:

The line was able to give Jackson time, while paving the way for an incredible day on the ground for the Ravens. Derrick Henry got going early and often, and he was rewarded accordingly on Tuesday:

High praise.
At the same time, while grades were high for Baltimore’s offensive line, it doesn’t tell the full story:
Ravens called 17 pass plays. 6 were without play action or a screen. They gave up pressures on three.

Against Buffalo’s stout defensive front, HC John Harbaugh better hope the line continues to make strides next week.
If they don’t, it’s possible the screen game could help things (I can’t believe I just typed that). The Ravens found success in the quick game against the Cowboys, which could be a promising sign for the likes of RB Justice Hill and WR Zay Flowers:
The Ravens ran not 1, not 2, but 3(!) successful screens vs. the Cowboys.

I’ll believe it when I see it consistently, but they were some of the better looking screens I can remember as a Ravens fan.
As for the man throwing the screens, the media continues to be all over him. Tuesday, though, it was in a fun and positive manner, as NBA star Donovan Mitchell talked about his experience at Louisville while Lamar Jackson was QB there:
“He had the basketball team getting up at 6am to tailgate.”

Coming from someone who watched Jackson tear up his alma mater live, it was – and continues to be – special to watch.
