OTL: Can Ravens Defense Complement Offense Just Enough?

Roquan Smith locker room huddle OTL

Sunday’s big win over the Broncos was hailed by the prognosticators as being a major battle between two premier units on opposite sides of the ball as Baltimore’s offense squared off against Denver’s defense. Safe to say that the Ravens easily got the upper hand in that one.

As has so often been pointed out recently, though, the one team that’s shown the most consistent ability to beat the Ravens in recent years has been… the Ravens.

Baltimore won the battle between the two sides of the ball when facing outside competition, but is this year’s historic offense going to be good enough to overcome the difficulties of an uncharacteristically sluggish defense?

Let’s start by talking about the unit that’s deservedly gotten plenty of buzz around the league: this incredible offense. By now, we’ve all sang the praises for what Derrick Henry has been able to bring to this offense, but I don’t think any of us could have imagined just how impactful he’s been as an addition. Despite concerns around his age, which were definitely not universal if you read what the RSR guys had to say in the offseason, Henry has continued his dominant form and then some. In just nine weeks of football, he’s eclipsed 1,000 yards on the season, which is absolutely absurd.

Henry has done what we all hoped he could do in being able to take the pressure off of Lamar Jackson, and it’s allowed the defending MVP has put together another incredible campaign in his own right.

Those numbers are unheard of through the midway point in the season, and they’re the kind of stats that we could only dream of for so many years as Ravens fans. There were a few times in franchise history that Baltimore’s offense has been serviceable-to-good, but in the years that the Ravens were deep playoff contenders, it was largely the defense that drove the bus (2012 Super Bowl run notwithstanding). Heck, Baltimore even has a legitimate WR1!

If those numbers were to play out as projected, Zay would finish the season with the most single-season receiving yards in franchise history among wide receivers, and trailing only Mark Andrews’ 2021 stats for the most of any Raven. Kudos are deserved all around for this personnel group, but especially to the O-line that endured so much criticism to start the year, as they’ve been able to jell and keep their guys upright.

Now let’s talk about the unit that we’re hoping can jell a little bit more and begin to recognize their potential: the defense. Credit to them, the second half of Sunday’s game was the best they’ve looked in a few weeks, as they kept the Broncos off the scoresheet, and we saw nice performances from guys like Tavius Robinson, Trenton Simpson, and Ar’Darius Washington.

Even so, there were times that Bo Nix had all day in the pocket, a persistent issue that we’ve seen across the past several weeks, and the secondary paid the price throughout the game.

In last week’s piece, I touched on what some of the issues defensively could be, and we’ll know by 4:00 pm today if the front office feels that an outside acquisition could be the key piece to fixing the issues on the back end. While I have a few names in mind that could be exciting for the Ravens to bring in, cap space is tight, and the addition of one or two players is certainly not going to fix everything.

I’ll say this: you can’t hope to offensively boat-race every opponent you play, regardless of how good the offense is. The Browns game showed that, if the offense isn’t firing on all cylinders, it could become a long day in a hurry if the secondary doesn’t have enough help. Some of the delayed blitzes and stunts that we saw in the second half on Sunday showed flashes of success, and we’ve got to hope that those schematic changes, and perhaps some new blood, can buy this offense the time it needs to keep the Ravens playing at their best.
