Stocks Tumble After Another Bed-Wetting Against Steelers

Stock Report Steelers Week 11

In a predictable outcome, the Ravens lost to the Steelers the same way they always lose: by beating themselves.  Horrendous coaching decisions, penalties and just overall not being or playing smart. However, you can add one more thing today, and that’s that they got beat up. The Steelers figuratively and literally took that game away from the Ravens.

Lamar Jackson, who played a poor game, said the team was “too hyped up.” The Steelers, much like KC always does, used the Ravens emotions against them. The positive was that the defense played better, and the pass defense only allowed 181 yards. That is something to build on.

Stock Up

Tre’Davious White

Welcome to Baltimore!  He played very well yesterday. He made plays we have not seen from Brandon Stephens all year. White’s year hasn’t been good overall, but he was a stud before the injuries. Maybe Baltimore can get a good two months out of him and get Stephens off the field (or at least off the boundary).

Nate Wiggins

Wiggins’ name was barely called yesterday…which is a good thing. He is shutting down his receivers and yesterday he got a lot more snaps. I expect his snaps, along with White’s, to continue to increase while Stephens’ snaps to keep going down.

Pass Rush

The Ravens were in the backfield all day yesterday. They had four sacks and numerous more pressures. Travis Jones continues to be a huge piece in this defense. When he is out there, the team is different from a pass rushing standpoint.

Roquan’s Run Defense

After Roquan left with a bad hammy, the Steelers ran the ball better. Roquan has been awful in zone coverage, but his run stopping has been solid and it really showed when he was off the field. His absence helped Pittsburgh ice the game.

Stock Down

Coaching

This is an across the board issue. Coming off a mini bye, the Ravens were undisciplined as usual. They came into the game leading the NFL in penalties and took a dozen more, including several inexplicable ones (WRs jumping early, more ineligible downfield calls on RPOs that Lamar Jackson treats like normal scrambles, illegal shifts…).

The special teams were awful yet again. This is the most underrated issue on this team, and it continues to kill them. Pittsburgh was wise to make the Ravens return kickoffs, because they’re going to commit a foul and be backed up more often than not.

Zach Orr, who did see his defense play much better, had an extremely head-scratching play call at the end when Justin Fields ran the ball. He had Kyle Hamilton playing a deep safety, 18 yards off of the LOS. With Roquan out, how on earth are you going to have your best defensive player and one of your best run stoppers that far off the line in an obvious passing situation?  There is zero logic there.

Todd Monken’s plan wasn’t any better. Derrick Henry had 13 carries, with zero touches in the fourth quarter, and he wasn’t on the field for the 4th down conversion attempt, which basically allowed the Steelers to know the play that was coming. They never tried to change it up. They didn’t go no huddle. There wasn’t much play action. In a game where Lamar was off, they didn’t do anything to try and help him. And they couldn’t calm the team down.

When Lamar is saying “we were too hyped,” that is something that should have been obvious to coaches and something they saw in practice. This is not the first time Lamar has said this over the years.

Rashod Bateman

In the Monday night game against Tampa, Bateman had 121 yards. In the four games since, he has 137 yards, has five or fewer targets in three of the four games and three or fewer catches in three of the four games. He isn’t involved in the offense enough.

Brandon Stephens

Is he headed towards the Marcus Williams treatment?  Williams has essentially been benched and is only active in case of injury. Seeing White and Wiggins play well and get an increase in snaps, Stephens is going to continue to see less and less playing time, especially since he continues to play the ball poorly. He had a breakup on the Steelers’ first drive, but upon replay we could see that he really didn’t do anything. The one moon ball Russell Wilson completed to George Pickens was, of course, with Stephens in coverage. He missed a tackle earlier in that drive that led to a big gain.

Justin Tucker

Two more missed FGs yesterday. I continue to believe the calls for him to retire are just stupid – but the fact is that the team can’t rely on him right now and that’s absolutely devastating. They lost by two – if Tucker hits either of those, we may be talking about a much different game today.

Team Identity

The identity of this team is supposed to be a tough, physical team that can beat you up on all levels. But the true identity of the team is to wilt in big games, while being bullied and thorougly out-coached. When the lights are the brightest, they become soft, and John Harbaugh’s messaging is lost on the team. They aren’t a smart team. The football IQ is low.
