GOOD, BAD & UGLY: Ravens Toy With Sorry Giants

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Ravens over Giants 35-14

Ravens 35, Giants 14

Even the most pessimistic Ravens fan never doubted the outcome of Sunday’s game in the Meadowlands. The Giants are a sorry team, a sorry franchise. The Mara Family ancestors must be doing 360’s in their coffins seeing what has become of a once proud organization. Big Blue has become Big Blows.

The Giants quarterback position is pathetic. Their head coach is a lunatic, blinded by emotion, regularly losing his composure, which sets the tone for this rudderless ship in the night called the New York Giants.

For all intents and purposes this game looked and felt like a preseason game during which the Ravens sent out their starters until the game was completely in control, while the Giants sent out their tattered roster, littered with reserves – players looking to show up on film to help save their roster spots. So, in many ways, this game is hard to assess.

Perhaps the best takeaways are:

• The Ravens won
• Starters got some rest on a short week
• There were no significant injuries

Now the Ravens will turn their attention towards the Steelers. With a win, the Ravens will gain a share of the AFC North. Beyond the Steelers game on Saturday, the Ravens travel to Houston on Christmas Day and then wrap up the season at home against the Browns. Meanwhile the Steelers battle the Chiefs in Pittsburgh on Christmas Day (why is it that the Steelers almost always host key, nationally televised games) and then put a bow on their regular season on January 5 when they host the Bengals.

The Bengals beating the Titans is a good thing for the Ravens. As long as Cincinnati is in the race, they will play to win and just punch in their time cards.

One game at a time. Things can change quickly as we witnessed when Patrick Mahomes limped off the field with a high ankle sprain. It didn’t look good, but we’ve seen these Hollywood performances from Kermit the Quarterback in the past.

Let’s get on with it, shall we?

THE GOOD

Offense

Roger Rosengarten’s ascent has been steady and this game in East Rutherford was no exception. Another solid performance from the rookie…How can anyone not appreciate Justice Hill. He plays with energy, does whatever is asked of him and does it well. I can’t remember the last time he went down upon contact as a receiver out of the backfield. Five catches for 61 yards and a score represent a solid outing…Zay Flowers was quite dependable and while his day didn’t include any explosive plays, he made a few catches to give the Ravens favorable down and distance scenarios. He pulled in 6 passes for 53 yards which puts him at 66 catches for 916 yards on the season…

Rashod Bateman had his first multi-TD game of his career. The first on a designed boot during which Bate really stuck his leg in the ground to turn around the corner and present a wide-open target for Lamar. The result, a 49-yard score. Later on, he ran a razor sharp route to haul in his second pass, a perfectly placed laser from Lamar towards the back of the end zone. The development of this pass-catch combination will help to open things up for primary guys like Flowers and Mark Andrews…Nice to see Devontez Walker get on the board with a catch, his first as a pro, finished with a veteran toe-tap in the back of the end zone.

A few other worthy mentions on offense…

• Baltimore scored 35 points, totaling 445 yards (275 passing & 170 rushing) and 25 first downs.
• The Ravens’ offense converted on 9-of-11 third-down attempts, marking a season-best 81.8% success rate.
• The 2024 Ravens set a new franchise record for the most yards (5,937 yards) gained through 14 games of a season in franchise history, surpassing the previous record set by the 2019 Ravens (5,736).

Defense

Tough to get too excited about the Ravens defensive performance considering the quality of the opponent. The Giants O-line is a slight upgrade to a string of 50-gallon plastic trash cans across the offensive front. And the quarterbacks the Giants marched out on the field were laughable. Tommy DeVito might be more suited to a career delivering raviolis while Tim Boyle should consider a job as an illusionist in Vegas. Here’s a guy who came out of UConn undrafted in 2018, and has played for 7 different NFL teams.

As a pro, Boyle had 4TD’s and 12 INT’s entering the game with a career 57.6 passer rating. He added 1 of each during yesterday’s loss, but the fact that Boyle has survived this long in the league after a collegiate career during which he had 1 TD pass, and 13 INT’s is quite impressive. He’d probably be a backup on Bay Café’s touch football team. So, let’s give him credit for his survival instincts.

That said, Travis Jones was solid up front, Roquan Smith was physical and motivated chasing sideline to sideline and Kyle Van Noy had a nice outing, adding a sack and scraping down the line of scrimmage to drop Devin Singletary for no gain…Nice to see Michael Pierce back on the field. He moved well despite a physique that resembles Frosty the Snowman…Tavius Robinson was solid at the point of attack along the edge…Ar’Darius Washington turned in another solid performance and his time with the JUGS gun has paid off. He had a nice interception during 4th quarter to put a bow on the game.

A few other worthy mentions on defense…

• Baltimore’s defense permitted just 14 points on 236 yards (181 passing & 55 rushing), while holding the Giants to 2-of-12 (16.7%) on third down. The 236 yards tied for Baltimore’s fewest allowed in a single game this season (also vs. Buffalo on 9/29/24).

• The Ravens also registered 3 sacks (1 each by LB Malik Harrison, OLB David Ojabo & OLB Kyle Van Noy). Baltimore’s 52 straight games with at least 1 sack and 17 straight games with multiple sacks each mark the league’s longest active respective streak.

Special Teams

Jordan Stout netted 46 yards on two punts…Justin Tucker was 5 for 5 on PATs…Desmond King had a very nice punt return for 22 yards while Justice Hill had a 59-yard kick return to get the game started.

THE BAD

Offense

Lamar Jackson fumbled at the Giants 12-yard line, just the team’s second play from scrimmage. That said, a more willing block from Flowers and Lamar probably scoots around the right and into the endzone. A bit uncharacteristic from Zay…Patrick Mekari’s string of poor performances remains intact…Ronnie Stanley had a subpar game and was beaten badly by Brian Burns for one of the Giants sacks.

Defense

At this point there’s no denying that Trenton Simpson has been a major disappointment. He hasn’t developed much at all and even against the Giants, he only earned 5 snaps on defense…Nnamdi Madubuike, even against this rag-tag line that the Giants march out on the field, didn’t really stand out all that much, except of course for his roughing-the-passer flag for 15 yards…Tre’Davious White looks slow. If you think replacing Brandon Stephens with White is the answer, you’d be wrong. It would probably make things even worse. But some changes are in order. Stephens may as well have a bullseye on his back…Giving up 14 points to a team is usually not embarrassing, unless you do that when playing the 2024 New York Giants.

THE UGLY

Offense

Squandering a 59-yard kick return by Hill to set up first-and-10 on the game’s very first possession at the Giants 37-yard line. Two plays later the Ravens would turn it over in the red zone. That’s not what championship teams do.

Defense

Brandon Stephens has become a liability. I have no idea what DB coach Chris Hewitt does with Stephens or the entire secondary for that matter, but the results are just a waste of athleticism and talent. Stephens is regularly in position to make a play but what happens too often when he’s targeted, is the receiver makes the play because Stephens has not located the ball’s flight path, or he gets handsy and gets flagged for DPI. On Sunday he was flagged twice for 34 yards in total. The secondary had 5 penalties for 63 yards. The defense overall, had 9 penalties for 101 yards. The Ravens remain the most penalized team in the league, now with 117 accepted penalties for 997 yards. That averages out to 8 penalties for 66 yards.

Here’s John Harbaugh on the regular occurrence of unsightly yellow laundry inspired by his team’s regular mistakes:

“Well, the biggest thing was the pass interference calls. I don’t know about the one late against ‘Des’ [Desmond King II]. I’ll have to see that one. The other ones, [we] just [have to] get our head around quicker, play the ball [and] play the ball sooner. One time we were playing the ball, but there was a grab. They called it tight. Those are tight, tight called plays there in terms of pass interference, so we have to adjust. [For] roughing the passer, you have to find a way to get off to the side. You have to find a way to do it, so we’ll be drilling it. We’ll be working on those. Those are kind of technique things that we just have to do a good job of working on because that’s really … Their drives were penalty inspired. If it wasn’t for the penalties, those drives wouldn’t have happened, so it’s obviously something that’s very important.”

Rinse and repeat. We’ll hear this again soon, yet nothing changes.

Is there any doubt?

Lamar’s spectacular performances by now are almost expected. It’s as if he’s programmed us with his regular brilliance, into viewing a 5TD performance like it’s nothing more than a regular Sunday walk in the park for the MVP candidate.

To recap…

• Jackson completed 21-of-25 passes for 290 yards and 5 TDs with 0 INTs (154.6 passer rating), while also adding 6 carries for 65 yards.

• Lamar is the first player in NFL history to complete 80% of his passes for at least 250 yards and 5 TDs with 0 INTs, while adding 50-plus rushing yards. Jackson is also the only player in NFL history to record at least 250 passing yards, 5 passing TDs, 0 INTs and 50 rushing yards on multiple occasions (also 10/21/24 at TB) during a career.

• Jackson’s six outings with at least 5 passing TDs and 0 INTs are the third most by a QB in NFL history, trailing only Tom Brady (eight) and Drew Brees (eight).

COACHING

Todd Monken

Misdirection and sleight of hand were in play yesterday. The Ravens gave a few new looks for opponents to consider moving forward. Really liked the way Monken moved Lamar, leaning on boots and roll outs. A few of the route combinations forced Giants defenders to pick their poison and when they did, Lamar made them pay.

Zach Orr

The numbers tell a different story, but the Ravens defense really played uninspired football. They gave up 236 net yards, but the penalty yards boost the Giants’ offensive totals to 337. That’s a bad offense that Orr’s troops defended. For them to put together a 13 play, 80 yard drive aided by 41 yards of penalties while consuming 8:38 of clock, is flat out embarrassing.

Odds & Ends

There’s something going on in that Eagles locker room. Arguably they are the most talented team in the NFL. But things like this, things like A.J. Brown v. Jalen Hurts, like a Led Zeppelin song, it makes me wonder…

Trick Play?
