Orr Makes a Board Presentation
Through the first 10 games of the season, the Ravens defense yielded 294.9 passing yards per game. But thanks to the NFL’s No. 1 offense, the Ravens still managed to eke out a (7-3) record. Still, changes had to be made, especially for a team with postseason aspirations.
Exit Marcus Williams and Eddie Jackson.
The benching of both Williams and Jackson paved the way to a start for Ar’Darius Washington. It also forced DC Zach Orr to use his unicorn defender, Kyle Hamilton, in a more traditional safety role. The initial results against the Steelers on November 17th were solid, but Orr still thought another change was necessary.
You may recall that opponents had been carving up the short to intermediate area of the Ravens secondary with crossers, slants and quick passes to tight ends, backs and receivers. Apparently, the culprit was Trenton Simpson. So, Orr went to the lab with his trusty assistant Dean Pees and came up with a plan to alternate Chris Board and Malik Harrison.
And while it may not be as simple as Board takes snaps during passing situations and Harrison when rushing plays are more likely, Orr seems to be pushing the right buttons. Since Board has taken on more defensive snaps dating back to Week 12 encompassing 5 games, the Ravens have given up just 169.2 passing yards per game. To put that into perspective, the best pass defense in the league over the first 17 weeks is that of the Tennessee Titans who give up 168.5 passing yards per game.
The changes have worked for the Ravens defense. And perhaps the most understated, the most underrated upgrade is none other than the Week 17 Jimmy’s Famous Seafood Big Crab Cake, Christopher Torvan Board from North Dakota State.
