OTL: Ravens Can Claim AFC North on Saturday

Harbaugh dancing divisional OTL

The Baltimore Ravens spent Christmas day earning control of their own destiny- should they beat the Browns in the regular season finale the AFC North crown is theirs. The rest of Week 17 was about showcasing the young quarterback talent in the league. It started with the Denver Broncos forcing overtime (and eventually losing) with the Bengals due to Bo Nix heroics. Jeff Kerr from CBS Sports buys the Nix hype:

Lost in the shadow of Joe Burrow‘s MVP-type performance was how Nix played in the Broncos’ overtime loss to the Bengals. Nix certainly showed he had what it takes to lead the Broncos to the playoffs in the fourth quarter, in which he went 9 of 11 for 126 yards with two touchdowns and an interceptions for a 126.1 passer rating. On Denver’s final drive in regulation, Nix went 5 of 6 for 63 yards and a touchdown — the 25-yard pass to Marvin Mims Jr. on fourth down with eight seconds left to force overtime.

Nix finished 24 of 31 for 219 yards with three touchdowns to one interception and a 114.9 passer rating in the loss. He did miss some key throws in overtime, but Nix showcased his tremendous talent on plenty of passes late in the game to keep the Broncos in it.

I’ll admit to being a Nix skeptic from the beginning. I’ll also admit that I texted my brother after he forced overtime with a fourth down shot to the end zone, that “I’ll shut up.” Nix can make the throws and he’s in the perfect situation with Sean Payton. Things lined up for Nix. I kind of already knew he had the intangibles but his ability to extend plays and keep track of his receivers down the field is absolutely remarkable. That touchdown to Marvin Mims Jr. may have been one of the moments I’ll remember for the rest of my life. Nix is just making things happen and it’s impressive. Halfway through the season I would have written Jayden Daniels as the rookie of the year with a permanent marker. Now it’s as contentious a race as the MVP nominees are in.

The Sunday night finale was the rookie quarterback battle between Daniels and the Michael Penix. Penix, who replaced Kirk Cousins for the Falcons, started the game with an interception on a miscommunication with his receiver. Things calmed down and the rookie quarterbacks were able to show off in an impressive back and forth game. It went into overtime after Penix’s first touchdown pass tied the game with the subsequent PAT.

This throw was a thing of beauty. It was on a rope. This speaks to Penix’s arm talent and his confidence to get the job done in the waning moments of a game. I’ve always been sold on Penix as an NFL quarterback. Now we know his incredible potential is ready to be fulfilled on the field.

In the end. Daniels found Zach Ertz for the winning touchdown. It was an incredible game to close out a fun Sunday of football. Every Ravens fan recognized that when Washington pulled out the QB power play they were determined to end this thing with his legs. Daniels and Penix could have a lot of these matchups. With Nix, they make up the upcoming generation of quarterbacks.

The Denver Broncos falling to Cincinnati set the first domino in place for the Bengals to make the playoffs. The Bengals, who must beat Pittsburgh in the regular season finale, also got help with the Indianapolis Colts getting eliminated this weekend. Are the Bengals a team the Ravens want to avoid in the postseason? Chris Trapasso from CBS Sports certainly thinks the Bengals are the most dangerous team in the hunt for the last playoff spot.

“n short, the Bengals are dynamic offensively, with an elite-level quarterback, an elite-level No. 1 receiver and an elite-level No. 2 wideout. Nothing is more threatening in today’s NFL than that combination.

And they boast this — a legitimate NFL Defensive Player of the Year-worthy campaign from Trey Hendrickson. He has the most sacks (14) and second-most pressures (72) in football.

So, elite quarterback, elite No. 1 and No. 2 receivers and elite edge rusher. Frightening.

It’s hard to beat a team three times. The Ravens swept the Bengals and they needed timely turnovers from Marlon Humphrey and a little luck to achieve this. The Ravens have a historically difficult time matching up against Ja’Marr Chase. The Bengals can beat the Ravens, Lamar Jackson just keeps having the last word. Baltimore has no fondness of the Bengals and they probably have a strong preference to see them miss the playoffs.

The Bengals coach thinks Joe Burrow is the best player in the NFL. On one hand that’s exactly what you would expect Zac Taylor to say. The MVP race has become a two-way race between Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen. The Bengals would have a playoff spot locked up already if they could have beaten the Ravens, yet Jackson outdueled Burrow both times.

Charlie Kolar, this is savage. The tight end tweeted out that the only thing Josh Allen leads Jackson in is QB sneaks. This is the kind of representation we love to see from Jackson’s teammates.

The Fox Sports clip shows commentary that boosts Lamar Jackson as the MVP. Here’s my take: how can he have a better statistical season than his two MVP runs and not win it again? Jackson is always going to be in the MVP conversation, especially after winning the award twice. Jackson is playing his best football ever and that means he absolutely merits the award.

There is good news for you Baltimore! You have to wait one day less to see if the Ravens will win the AFC North. The concluding AFC North games are set for Saturday evening. The Ravens get the 4:30 game.

Go forth and control your fate. Happy Monday.
