Chicago Cubs: Way too early look at potential 2025 All-Stars
The Chicago Cubs are still months away from taking the field in Toyko to open the 2025 regular season, but their roster appears to have a lot of key pieces in place. Returning next year are veterans to the team such as Ian Happ, Justin Steele, Seiya Suzuki, Nico Hoerner, and Dansby Swanson, while newcomers such as Kyle Tucker and Matthew Boyd will be looking to make an impact. Meanwhile, rising prospects like Michael Bush and Pete Crow-Armstrong will be looking to build upon their rookie seasons with Matt Shaw likely joining them to begin his MLB career.
Here, we take a way too early look at potential 2025 All-Stars.
Current Chicago Cubs that have been All-Stars in the past
Last year, pitcher Shota Imanaga was the lone Cubs player to get an All-Star bid. The year before that, Dansby Swanson, Justin Steele, and Marcus Stroman all made it to the mid-summer classic. While Stroman is no longer with the team, Ian Happ was an All-Star in 2022 and rounds out the last of the current players to make it in a Cubs uniform. Newcomer Kyle Tucker, has been an All-Star each of the past three seasons as a member of the Houston Astros.
Chicago Cubs players with a good chance of being 2025 All-Stars
On paper, Kyle Tucker, Dansby Swanson, Ian Happ, Justin Steele, and Shota Imanaga stand the best chance of representing the Cubs in the All-Star game. Tucker will be looking to make his fourth straight appearance whereas Swanson had a streak of consecutive All-Star appearances snapped a season ago as he made it as a member of the Atlanta Braves in 2022.
Last year, an early season hamstring injury slowed Steele down, which played a key factor into him not getting All-Star recognition. Imanaga will be looking to build upon a strong first MLB season by making it back to the mid-summer classic.
Dark horse candidates to be 2025 All-Stars
Surprise players tend to emerge each season, and the Chicago Cubs have a few players with breakout potential that could earn them All-Star honors. Seiya Suzuki has not yet been recognized as an All-Star, despite having a career 128 OPS+ since coming to Major League Baseball. Nico Hoerner, whose status for Opening Day is not yet known after undergoing flexor surgery this off-season, always plays standout defense and is a base stealing machine. Lastly, prospects Michael Bush and Pete Crow-Armstrong could have strong sophomore seasons and put themselves into All-Star considerations.
The 2025 All-Star game is July 15 this year and will be held at Truist Park. A lot can transpire between now and then, but looking ahead the Chicago Cubs have a lot of players with All-Star potential. The big question will be if they can put together strong enough first halves of the season to get there.
