Jets get Boyer’s Replacement; Hire Chris Banjo for Special Teams
Brant Boyer moved on to the San Francisco 49ers and the Jets have wasted no time in replacing him with former Broncos assistant special team’s coach Chris Banjo. This, according to Mike Klis of 9news in Denver.
Banjo has spent each of the past two seasons working in Denver under head coach Sean Payton. In that time, Denver’s special teams units have ranked near the top of the league in several key categories to include punt return average (1st), punt return average against (2nd) and kickoff return average (8th)
While Boyer had managed to survive multiple coaching changes, he moved on to San Francisco just a few days ago.
Expect the Jets to make changes not only with their special team’s coordinator, but with some of their personnel. Xavier Gipson, the team’s primary punt returner, has been quite the disappointment after bursting on the scene last year as a rookie with a game winning punt return in week 1 against the Bills.
Since then Gipson has been a middle of the road returner who the team should be looking to replace this season. Unless of course Banjo believes he can get more out of the undrafted free agent as the team moves forward.
