Steve Cohen's Getting Scorched

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Steve Cohen’s tenure as Mets owner has been filled with grand promises, flashy headlines, and questionable decisions, but his latest obsession—beating the Yankees to Juan Soto—proves he’s completely out of touch with what this franchise truly needs. Rather than focusing on strengthening the team that made a solid playoff run last year, Cohen is prioritizing splashy moves over sustaining the core of a competitive roster. And it’s becoming painfully obvious to Mets fans.

Let’s talk about Pete Alonso. Sure, he may not be the best first baseman in the league, but his contributions to this team—especially during the postseason—cannot be ignored. Alonso has been a cornerstone for the Mets, delivering crucial moments on the field and embodying the spirit of the fanbase. Yet here we are, watching rumors swirl about his potential departure, all while Cohen seems more interested in making waves by chasing marquee names like Soto or even Vlad Guerrero Jr.

For weeks, I’ve been calling Cohen out on his failure to prioritize Alonso, and some fans have pushed back, saying, “It’s David Stearns making these decisions, not Cohen.” To that, I ask: “How do you know? And even if that’s true, Cohen is still the owner—he has the final say.”

He’s the one who’s supposed to understand what this fanbase wants, and right now, it’s clear he doesn’t.

WFAN’s Joe Benigno captured the frustration perfectly:

“Do I want Pete back? Of course. The ‘boy genius’ Stearns, because let’s be honest, he’s smarter than everybody in the freaking room, doesn’t want him back. And the guy that I blame is the owner. I thought Stevie Cohen had a feel for the fanbase, okay? And now, you know what they’re pulling now with this, ‘Oh, Vlad Guerrero.’ ‘We’re going to get Vlad Guerrero.’ You know what? Screw Vlad Guerrero; I want my guy. I’m tired of it… I have lost every guy that I have had on my team, with the exception of David Wright… I am beyond livid. Look, I blame Cohen. To me, it’s on the owner. Cohen’s supposed to have a feel for this fanbase. He walks around with the Mets hat on and the whole nine yards. It’s on you, Stevie, to get this guy back to where he belongs.”

This is a man who speaks for a legion of fed-up Mets fans. Cohen was supposed to be different. He came in wearing the cap, talking about championships, and promising to elevate the franchise. But when it comes down to it, he’s looking more and more like the Wilpons every day—prioritizing glitz over grit, big names over continuity, and short-term headlines over long-term success.

Nothing will change for the Mets if this continues. Uncle Steve is proving to be just another failed owner, more interested in winning off-field PR battles than building a winning culture on the field. Foolish doesn’t even begin to describe it. Mets fans deserve better. Pete Alonso deserves better. And until Cohen figures that out, the Mets will remain stuck in the same cycle of mediocrity that has defined them for far too long.
