Luis Vázquez, a 25 year old shortstop, has been traded by the Chicago Cubs after being designated for assignment (DFA’d) earlier in the week. The decision to remove him from the 40-man roster came following the official announcement of Jon Berti signing with the team.

In what is a common return for DFA’d players, the Cubs are receiving cash considerations from the Baltimore Orioles after agreeing to trade him to them. Vasquez will join the Orioles 40-man roster and has two minor league options remaining.

Vasquez only just made his MLB debut with the Cubs a season ago, playing in 11 total games. There isn’t much to look into in regard to his big league statistics, but in the minor leagues last year he hit .271/.361/.456 with 20 home runs and 80 RBI’s. Those numbers came across the Double-A and Triple-A levels in which he also had an outstanding .324 BABIP, a strikeout rate of just 22%, and a walk rate of 10%.
Where will Luis Vazquez fit in on the Baltimore Orioles roster?
Before adding Vazquez, the Orioles already had a loaded infield consisting of Jordan Westburg, Ramon Urias, Gunnar Henderson, Jackson Holliday, and Coby Mayo. It’s doubtful that Vazquez will slide ahead of any of them on the depth chart, but given how much power Vazquez displayed a season ago, and the fact he is controllable with minor league options, it’s likely he starts in the minor leagues and Baltimore watches to see what happens. Vazquez has a lot of talent, so acquiring him for very little is a low risk-high reward signing for the Orioles.
