OTL: NFL Salary Cap About to Explode Again?

Boy is the 2025 Ravens offseason off to a wild start. Needless to say, this must have been HC John Harbaugh’s reaction when seeing the script:

And on top of it all, fans were treated to this surprise on Tuesday:

Obviously, Lamar Jackson has a full head of hair tightened up for the NFL season, but it never ceases to offer a laugh when he lets it out.
All jokes aside, though, Baltimore continues to turn its attention toward making this happen:
No theatrics just old fashion hard nosed football….give me what I want https://t.co/eZDKSKRTai

The battle of the birds would be a fun game to watch next February, but as I continue to write, it’s hard to know exactly what needs to happen for the Ravens to make the big game. Is it overhauling the offensive line? Is it adding an elite pass rusher? Is it patching up a secondary that looked like burnt toast for much of last season?
Maybe it’s a combination of all three, and we’ll dive into some of those rumors today, starting with the OL. We all know building in the trenches should be a priority for GM Eric DeCosta, but nothing highlights that need more than this clip against those same Eagles:
Loot at those two guards. Ravens can’t win the sb with that https://t.co/NtZiXc0gBC

While Philly seemed to have the best D-Line of all-time a few weeks ago, the point remains: Baltimore’s offensive line was a question mark entering the season and continued to be one over its course.
According to PFF (despite shockingly high grades), Alabama IOL Tyler Booker should be the pick at 27, and his strength in the run blocking department makes him an intriguing option. At the same time, will EDC want to use a first-rounder on the Guard spot? We haven’t seen it in a while.
It appears that PFF finally watched our guard play and thought, ‘wow, that’s pretty rough’ pic.twitter.com/7xaPZD4vXf

Meanwhile, free agency is another option, whether bringing in someone new or returning swiss army knife Patrick Mekari. Who would you prefer out of these two?
Ravens OL Patrick Mekari is projected to earn a three-year, $31M contract in free agency based off of his @spotrac calculated market value

Mekhi Becton is a UFA this offseason.
Interesting player to have next to Linderbaum, however:
1. He’s highly duplicative of Faalele in terms of size and being better at RG than LG with reduced pulling responsibilities
2. If you have both on the team, one would be forced into… pic.twitter.com/9mU75fKq6I

At the tackle spot, all eyes are on Ronnie Stanley. He may end up leading the free agent Tackle class, but ESPN’s Matt Bowen has him returning to Charm City:
Bowen has Ronnie Stanley being retained by the Ravens and Alaric Jackson signing with the Patriots.
Other OT movement:

On the other side of the trenches, it’s hard not to view the pass rush as another question mark that spanned the 2024 season. The unit had a nice year statistically, but never seemed to generate the consistent pressure needed to be truly feared. Daniel Jeremiah – who knows the organization extremely well – may have the remedy:
Thoughts?

Stewart is yet another EDGE player with ridiculous potential, but that does scare Ravens fans. I wouldn’t hate the pick, but would prefer an instant impact guy. Again, free agency or trade might be the best route here.
Lastly, the secondary is a hot topic, with Brandon Stephens departing and question marks at Safety. Hezzo notes that Jaire Alexander makes more sense than an EDGE acquisition, and I don’t disagree. Meanwhile, Mel Kiper – who also knows Baltimore well – has the Ravens taking Georgia’s Malaki Starks to solidify the back-end.
Been said Jaire would be more realistic than any edge trade y’all have in mind. https://t.co/K5JHWIhM0a

With the 27th pick in April’s NFL Draft, @FieldYates has Baltimore selecting Georgia safety Malaki Starks in his Mock Draft 3.0.

The dream scenario would likely be Starks at Pick 27, Stanley returning, a trade for Jaire Alexander, EDGE via free agency, and a Guard in Round 2. While that seems impossible (and obviously won’t happen), it may not be completely unrealistic.
Food for thought along with your lunch: how should the Ravens handle their cap given another upcoming explosion?
The salary cap is going to explode again, and it’s all because of this change in how Nielsen measures ratings.

Since we can’t see Brett’s entire tweet there, I’ll quote it:
The salary cap is going to explode again, and it’s all because of this change in how Nielsen measures ratings. Starting this year, they are leaning into using data directly from Smart TV manufacturers to measure viewing habits in addition to the traditional at-home panel method. This means NFL ratings in particular from Sunday Ticket on YouTube are going to be more accurately measured…and that number is going to be way bigger than you think because of just how many Gen-Z and Millennials consume football on streaming services. More accurate ratings means the league’s next broadcast rights negotiation in 2028/2029 is going to be WAY more expensive…which ultimately means massive jumps in the salary cap. If I’m a GM, that means next year…or maybe even this year…I can sign some truly outrageously back-loaded deals with a ton of funny money that all slams home in 2030 and not even care about the math.
Something to consider…
