CAMP NOTES: Day 6 Ends on a Sour Note

Likely Goes Down

You’ve heard it said before that training camp is a grind for NFL players. And it’s not just about the on-the-field work. There are the lifting sessions, the recovery sessions, the classroom sessions and of course the time spent with iPads to learn the playbook. Mix in temperatures with heat indices that regularly break through 100 degrees and it adds up to a month of torture.

And if that wasn’t enough, there are those dreaded injuries, some of which can cause a player to lose his place in the pecking order, risking roster survival. Then there are those injuries that can set an entire team back and place the club’s potential in jeopardy.

Such was the case when we learned of Isaiah Likely’s ankle injury, the extent of which has not yet been officially reported.

This is life in the NFL. There is no rest for the weary and there’s little time for empathy. One man’s loss is another’s opportunity. It’s now incumbent upon the other players and the coaching staff, to figure out how to pick up the slack for Likely until he returns.

Clearly John Harbaugh was agitated when he heard the news about Likely’s injury. A player who is ready to make his mark on the league; a player who has reportedly moved closer to a long-term deal. These positive developments all snatched away, perhaps only temporarily, by one rep that didn’t go as intended — and ironically the last rep of the day.

Then, on the heels of all that, a completely out-of-touch reporter, seemingly devoid of emotional awareness, asks the same question from the day before about cadence. CADENCE! The eye roll and slight shaking of the head by Harbaugh says it all at the 1:02 mark of the video clip below (click on the pic of Harbs to view).

Maybe the reporter should check his cadence.

Sweat Equity

I played golf recently. Had an early morning tee time and still my polo shirt was drenched. And it’s only golf. I can’t even imagine what it might feel like to be a 300-pound lineman doing the dirty work in the trenches, fully padded in 98-degree weather at 2 in the afternoon.

Some fans might dismiss the empathy and suggest that these athletes are being paid handsomely to play a kid’s game. And that’s a disservice to their profession.

To capture the environment and to give fans a perspective of camp through the eyes of a player, the Ravens outstanding media group led by Michelle Andres put together another masterpiece that I encourage you to view below.

Turning Heads

Over the years we’ve seen the Ravens bring in receivers via the draft who have flashed during camp only to fade into the abyss of Ravens wide receiver failures. Players like James Proche, Tandon Doss and Michael Campanaro immediately come to mind. Hopefully Devontez Walker isn’t another of those receivers because he is certainly impressing as we inch towards August.

Gaining an Edge

Mike Green is another young player capturing the attention of training camp observers. He already has an impressive array of pass rush moves and he has the power to truck would-be blockers with a well-developed bull rush. The work ethic is there and it’s accompanied by a chip on his shoulder to show the doubters across the NFL the error of their ways, and leave the 31 NFL GM’s not named Eric DeCosta “Green” with envy.

“What I like most about Mike, is he just gives great effort. When you think of some of the great players around the league, what defines them is great effort, and that may help you make a lot of plays within itself. He has a great grasp for the defense. [Outside linebacker coach] Matt Robinson‘s done a fantastic job teaching him in coverage and things like that. When we talk about pass rush, Mike is all in. Mike is everything he was advertised to be. I think the fans are going to like what they see.” ~ Pass Rush Coach Chuck Smith
