Camp Notes: DBs Rule the Day!
Stop me if you’ve heard this before: it was a brutally hot day at Ravens Training Camp on Friday. Leaving practice at the end of the day, my car’s thermostat was clocking in at around 98 degrees, but it felt every bit of 100+ out there. To their credit, the Ravens didn’t let it slow them down, and they put in a good day’s work, all things considered given the early ramp-up period we expect from Camp this time of year.

-To start the day, I bounced around watching some position group drills and individual work. The top three receivers in Zay Flowers, Rashod Bateman and DeAndre Hopkins got some work in on the side closest to the field house and looked to be working on initial release at the line. On the opposite side of the field, I watched the EDGEs work first on getting leverage and full extension of the arms as they exploded through their stances, and then on continuing to keep a blocker moving as they rushed, which looked particularly geared toward beating zone blocking schemes.
-The secondary was probably the strongest personnel unit of the day.

Nate Wiggins had a really nice practice and, to my eye, seems much looser and more confident in coverage than he did at this time last year. He certainly wasn’t bad then, but you can tell based on how he’s practicing now that he was still working on timing and the NFL game speed, which seems to be coming much more naturally to him now. Overall, that unit looked good from the very beginning of the day, and it carried throughout the team drills as well. They communicated well, and, following a few successful plays from the first-team offense, were able to follow up a Wiggins pass breakup on a screen with a gang tackle for a loss on a toss play. I asked Kyle Hamilton about how that unit had been able to make the communication look easy this early in Camp, and he has this to say:
I think it’s the offseason…We’re putting in the work during the spring, during the summer, we’re texting each other, calling each other, that way so we can get out here and we’re not behind the eight-ball because when we go up to Buffalo Week One, we want to the be the best we can be.
Kyle went on to credit Jaire Alexander for his involvement in regular communication and showing an eagerness to engage with the rest of the DBs as soon as he arrived. There were a few times today that Jaire didn’t look happy with himself in the early portion of practice, but it looked like that was mostly during drills with just the DBs. Once the team drills got going, he was his usual outgoing self, even breaking out the seatbelt celebration.
We could get used to this

Offensively, it was a little bit harder to evaluate the overall product. Without contact in these early practices, the defense sometimes goes about 50% speed to make sure the offense can get in sync, and we saw some snaps today that seemed like they were gimmes for the offense. Still, I don’t want to take away from Bateman making some nice catches, snagging high passes out of the air. Hopkins also looked no worse for wear after missing yesterday’s practice, as he doubled back and dove low to scoop a catch on an underthrown pass. The offensive work seemed to heavily emphasize work to the outside of the field today, so we’ll see how the ball gets spread around as we continue.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t give Tyler Loop the props he deserves, because he was flawless today.

That kick had a few yards to spare, and while Ravens social media team reports it was a 68-yarder, the media scrum clocked it at about 63 yards. Either way, it was still very impressive, especially given the leg it had on it, and Loop went a perfect 10-for-10 on the day. Kicker John Hoyland was a perfect 9-for-9 in his last outing, so the kicking competition might be heating up at the same pace as the weather.
We’ll keep you posted for more as Camp progresses!
