CAMP NOTES: The Pads Go On!

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Monday’s Training Camp practice was another hot one, and thankfully for those observing, a little shorter than some of the ones leading up to it. In the first padded practice, some guys flourished while others seemed to be getting used to things, and it was pretty evident that the situation had changed from the get-go. Coach Harbaugh acknowledged the differences in his post-practice presser, saying:

“We had a great day for football, especially it being the first day in pads, that’s always a kind of a momentous day, and our guys really took to it… they were excited, and I thought we had a good day. But it takes a little bit of adjustment to get your pads, kind of, set. Taking a hit, giving a hit, bracing yourself, those things are things that you only really can do by doing. So, I thought that was part of it today.”

Of all of the players you’d expect would have the biggest adjustment to face in padded workouts, kickers would probably be low on the list, but Harbs also made it a point to mention that Tyler Loop had brought up feeling different for padded workouts, which could explain some of his struggles today.

Some players who didn’t struggle in practice today were the guys that seem like they’ve been waiting all summer to hit somebody: the defense, particularly the D-line.

Mike Green was as active today as I’ve seen him this entire camp cycle. In individual workouts, he’d been hit or miss against blockers who had been able to effectively anchor, but he’d also looked very explosive in overpowering blockers when they had their feet moving. He showed it in a big way today, getting into the backfield multiple times and getting at least one pressure that I saw. In some team drills, as the D-linemen were practicing jumping up and getting deflections at the line of scrimmage, he was getting such a good jump that he was just snatching the ball away for interceptions.

Broderick Washington deserves a special shoutout as well. His power, rather than his speed, has always been the hallmark of his game, and on back-to-back plays in scrimmage, he recorded what would have been at least a sack and a pressure, if not 1.5 sacks. Washington has been working with pass rush coach Aaron Wallace for the past few offseasons, and that work appears to be paying dividends. The defense pretty handily won the day with the push up front, and the second and third team offenses seemed to be having a very hard time getting in sync with the pressure coming up front.

Some rapid fire news and notes:

Odafe Oweh and Carson Vinson got into it at the end of a play with punches being thrown. Coach Harbaugh brushed it off, chalking it up to the guys just competing hard.

Jalyn Armour-Davis went down with an injury during practice, and I was at the field where the DBs were practicing when the injury happened. Media personnel are pretty strictly limited in what can be reported regarding injuries and when, so I’ll be brief: the injury didn’t appear to be the result of any contact, as it occurred on an individual drill. The training staff had JAD go to the side and attempt to stretch out before he went into the locker room with some assistance, exiting for the day. Coach Harbaugh indicated that JAD will get an MRI soon to determine the extent of the injury.

— Elsewhere in injuries and absences, Jaire Alexander missed practice with some swelling in his leg but is expected to be back in the next few days. Similarly, Bilhal Kone is expected back “very, very soon” per Harbs, and Rashod Bateman should only be briefly absent as he was sent home sick.
