OTL: Final Cuts Loom
Roster cutdown day is here, Flock. It’s probably the only bad date on the offseason calendar between now and real, actual NFL football, which is great, but cutdown day itself can be a real bummer. Fanbases around the league see guys emerge during the preseason at the fringes of the roster and hang onto the hope that they can earn a spot on the final 53, and when it doesn’t happen, you just hope that player can stick around on the practice squad and stay ready if their number is eventually called.
Granted, the fear of passing on a guy to watch him become a superstar elsewhere is usually misplaced…
As we wait on #Ravens to make cuts, some even fretting the possible releases of players like Jay Higgins, Keyon Martin, Beau Brade & Reuben Lowery to name a few, this post from @nickkorte in 8/2023 may soothe your worries until the players are reclaimed & signed to the PS. pic.twitter.com/thkTsh4QKb

Players claimed on Waivers from Ravens at cutdown:
2024: None
2023: Kyu Blu Kelly, Tristan Colon
2022: None
2021: Nate McCrary
2020: None
2019: Tyler Ervin, Matthew Orzech, Bennett Jackson
2018: Carl Davis
2017: Taquan Mizzell, Donald Payne
2016: Arthur Brown, Terrence Brooks https://t.co/uatWqixIbg— Brian McFarland (@RavensSalaryCap) August 25, 2025
…but the greater fear is that a young guy with potential doesn’t get the opportunity to develop with playing time and ends up becoming as a cut candidate. A few UDFAs have made legitimate cases for spots on the 53-man roster this year…
53-man roster comes down to 4 players and 3 spots for the Baltimore Ravens
1. Jake Hummel
2. Jay Higgins
3. Keyon Martin
4. Ben ClevelandI can not see the Ravens keeping 5 ILBs AND 7 CBs. But if they do, Ben Cleveland becomes the odd man out.

…including Reuben Lowery, whose spot seems all-but-assured now. Playing into that equation was the news that Jake Hummel, a free agent who came over from the Rams in the summer, had a procedure on his hand and, per Coach Harbaugh, “should be back on the field next week,” including the confirmation that Hummel had earned a spot on the starting 53.
Meant Hummel should return to practice next Wednesday.
But Harbaugh made clear that he’ll be on 53. https://t.co/grI10P6Lsf— Jeff Zrebiec (@jeffzrebiec) August 25, 2025
As much as we could spin our wheels on who might end up drawing the short straw as a result (we all hope not Jay Higgins), we’ll know for sure come 4:00 pm or shortly thereafter.
What we can all hope for is the joy that comes for these guys that do crack the roster, and that they can make the absolute best of their opportunities.

…but remember that EDC is likely keeping his eyes peeled on moves happening elsewhere as well. Who knows, maybe we might see a reunion at other roster spots that have been called into question at times.
