Jake Slaughter Earns ESPN All-America Honors
ESPN put Florida center Jake Slaughter on their First-Team All-America list this week. Slaughter gets his third preseason honor before the 2025 season starts. The big guy from Trinity Catholic came back to Florida when he could have gone to the NFL.
Last year was huge for Slaughter. He got five first-team All-America picks and two second-team spots. The 6-foot-4 center weighs 303 pounds and plays every snap like his life depends on it. Coach Billy Napier was pumped when Slaughter said he’d return.
Slaughter walked on at Florida and worked his way up to starter. Now he’s probably the best center in college football. His teammates love him because he never takes a play off.
Football Fans Get Ready for Betting Season
College football brings out the gamblers every fall. Tons of people also bet on NFL games once the pros start playing. The big betting sites make it super easy to place wagers on almost anything.
You can bet on who wins games or how many points teams score. Player bets are really popular now, too. People love betting on NFL games because there are so many different ways to win money. The apps work great on phones, so you can bet from anywhere.
The Numbers Show Why Slaughter Gets Respect
Pro Football Focus gave Slaughter a grade of 81.1 last season. That put him fifth among all centers in the country. His blocking grades were even better. He scored 80.2 for run blocking and 84.2 for pass protection.
Nobody else in major college football had grades over 80 in both areas. Slaughter faced the best pass rushers in the SEC every week and still dominated. He gave up one sack all year on more than 400 pass plays. That’s incredible.
Since 2023, Slaughter has had an 85.8 grade from Pro Football Focus. Only one other center rates higher than that. NFL scouts notice when players stay good for multiple years.
Draft Experts Love What They See
Most mock drafts have Slaughter going in the first round next April. Pro Football Focus thinks he’ll go 20th overall to Houston. They rank him as the 15th-best prospect in the entire 2026 class.
The Rimington Trophy people put him on their watch list for best center. The Outland Trophy also has him listed as a top interior lineman. Slaughter has legitimate chances to win both awards this season.
Some people were shocked when he decided to stay at Florida. NFL teams already liked what they saw on tape. Another good year could move him into the top 15 picks.
Florida Expects Big Things This Fall
The Gators play Long Island on August 30 to start the season. Game time is 4 p.m. at home in Gainesville. Florida got ranked 15th in the preseason polls mainly because guys like Slaughter came back.
DJ Lagway takes over at quarterback as a sophomore. Having Slaughter snap him the ball should make his job much easier. Good centers help young quarterbacks avoid mistakes and stay confident.
Florida gave Slaughter a brick outside the stadium back in January. They only do that for consensus All-Americans. The ceremony was pretty cool, and Slaughter deserved every bit of recognition he got.
