Brewers manager has Chicago Cubs crowd excuse after loss

The Chicago Cubs entered Wednesday night’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field with their backs against the wall after starting the NLDS 0-2. Following two straight wins in Chicago, the Cubs will play their third elimination game in a row against the Brewers on Saturday night at American Family Field.

The Cubs crowd was noticeable during the two-game homestand on Wednesday and Thursday night. Chicago had a crowd of 40,737 in Wednesday’s 4-3 win and 41,770 on hand in Thursday night’s 6-0 victory.

The noise level made it hard for the Brewers to operate.

Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell (11) and Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy (49) shake hands before the National League Division Series game on Saturday October 4, 2025 at American Family Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Per Jesse Rogers of ESPN, Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy argued that the crowd at Wrigley Field affected the outcome of the last two games.

“I mean, it affected the game. This crowd affected the game the last two games. It affected the way we played for sure.”

Cubs manager Craig Counsell appeared to agree, saying he had “never seen” something like what Cubs fans did on Thursday night.

“The crowd was incredible tonight,” Counsell said. “I’ve never seen a baseball game like that. That was just amazing what they did tonight.”

The series now moved back to Milwaukee for Game 5 on Saturday night, and the winner of the contest will move on to the NLCS. The Cubs will have to deal with an excited Brewers fan base, eager to make life difficult for the visiting Chicago team.

If Chicago wants to play more games at Wrigley Field in October, they’re going to have to block out the noise.
