Chicago Bears have curious position battle surface in Week 8

The Chicago Bears pass rush was finally a factor against the New Orleans Saints in Sunday’s 26-14 win at Soldier Field. The defense only generated eight sacks through the first six weeks, but sacked quarterback Spencer Rattler four times for 24 yards.

Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen did a good job of providing extra rushers, as Montez Sweat was the only defensive lineman to record a sack of Rattler. Linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, safety Jaquan Brisker and cornerback Kyler Gordon had a sack each.
The Bears decided not to activate Austin Booker for Week 7 despite the second-year defensive end being a full participant in practices.

Per Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, there is apparently a significant position battle going on at edge rusher. Biggs suggested Chicago’s staff trusts Dominique Robinson more than Booker at this point.
While Booker should return to play the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, there should be a battle at practice this week to decide the rotation.
“Robinson got more and his ascent is probably one reason why the team decided to wait one more week to activate Austin Booker from injured reserve to the 53-man roster,” Biggs wrote. “Booker, working his way back from a preseason knee injury, has been a full participant in practice for two weeks but the team chose to keep him down one more week.
“Expect Booker to be on the 53-man roster before Sunday’s game at Baltimore. What that does for the rotation remains to be seen. Booker could factor in pass-rushing situations but it’s clear the coaches are comfortable leaning into Robinson a little bit more.”
Dominique Robinson is in the final year of his rookie contract
Robinson, a fifth-round pick in 2022, is on the final year of his rookie contract. The Bears are getting a chance to evaluate what they want to do with the 27-year-old pass rusher after the season.
Robinson has recorded seven tackles, and 1.5 sacks this season.
Booker, a fifth-round pick in 2024, led the Bears in sacks this preseason. But he’ll be going against much harder competition against the Ravens in the regular season if Chicago chooses to activate him this week.
