Chicago Bears HC was encouraged by Caleb Williams’ vs. Baltimore Ravens

Caleb Williams Chicago Bears

A lot of Chicago Bears fans and local media criticized quarterback Caleb Williams for his performance in the team’s 30-16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.

Williams and the offense struggled near the red zone, settling for two field goals in the first quarter. The offense was inconsistent after the first two drives, only having two more scoring drives for the rest of the game.

Williams finished 25-of-38 for 285 yards and one interception against Baltimore. He added three rushes for 24 yards.

His interception in the fourth quarter was costly, as it set up a Ravens touchdown two plays later to make it a 23-13 game.

More News: Bears HC Ben Johnson blamed his team captains for Ravens loss

Despite the negative press surrounding Williams on Sunday, Bears head coach Ben Johnson backed up Williams on Monday.

Here is what Johnson had to say about Williams’ performance against the Ravens on Sunday during a radio appearance on ESPN 1000’s Carmen and Jurko:

“He played better this game than I think he had the previous two. When you look at it, all 60 minutes, and I’m not saying it’s perfect. I actually came away, from watching the tape this morning, encouraged that we took a step in the right direction here this week.

I know for some people it’s hard maybe rationalize because the result wasn’t there. But yeah, I saw tangible growth from him. He’s working his ass off.”

Progress is slow for the Chicago Bears quarterback

Caleb Williams will have four more nationally televised games to prove that he is an elite-level quarterback.

Williams posted a quarterback rating of 77.2 for the game, going against one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL going into that game.

The criticism of Williams’ play was likely compounded by Drake Maye having a great game against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. The 2024 No. 3 pick by the New England Patriots is entering the NFL MVP conversation one season after the No. 3 pick, Jayden Daniels, won offensive rookie of the year.

Williams is still using training wheels.

However, it’s too early to give up on the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner. Williams has shown progress this season, even though it’s much slower than what fans and the media hoped.

Frankly, Williams invited judgment for the way he marketed himself during the pre-draft process.
