The Jets Must Make Big Changes at the NFL Trade Deadline — For Now and the Future
With the NFL trade deadline just two weeks away, teams across the league are getting ready to make moves, and the Jets should absolutely be one of them. They’re 0-7, and the season already feels like it’s slipping away. But that doesn’t mean they should stand pat. This is a real chance to shake things up and start fixing what clearly isn’t working.
Quarterback Play Still a Major Problem
The most obvious issue is quarterback. The play there has been rough all year, bad enough that the team had to make a change midseason. But even after the switch, the offense still isn’t producing. The play-calling has been predictable. Execution has been sloppy. And honestly, it just doesn’t feel like there’s a clear plan from week to week. It’s frustrating to watch.
Offensive Line and Receivers Struggling
That said, the problems go beyond just the quarterback. The offense as a whole hasn’t been good, but we also have to be fair. It’s easy to look at the sack totals or lack of rushing yards and blame the offensive line, but that’s not the whole story. When your quarterback is holding the ball for over five seconds, like in the Denver game, it’s hard to blame the line. NFL linemen are coached to hold up for around 2.5 seconds. If they’re giving twice that, it’s not all on them.
On top of that, defenses aren’t even respecting the pass. They’re stacking the box and daring the Jets to throw, which only makes things harder for the run game.
The receivers and tight ends haven’t helped much either. Guys aren’t getting open. And when they do, there have been drops or missed throws. It just feels like a broken offense from top to bottom, and it’s going to take more than one fix to turn it around.
Defensive Progress Offers Hope
Now, the defense? There’s actually been some improvement there. After giving up 26 points per game over the first six weeks, they’ve cut that in half over the last two. That’s real progress and deserves some credit. The unit looks more organized, more physical, and they’re finally starting to get some stops. With even a little help from the offense, this group could actually be a strength.
Still, the big picture hasn’t changed much. Every year, we hear the same things: help is coming, development is happening, but it never quite clicks. The Jets are supposed to represent New York. It’s time they started acting like it.
The NFL Trade Deadline Is About the Future
This trade deadline isn’t just about making a splash or trying to save this season. It’s about laying the groundwork for something better in 2026 and beyond. If they can move veterans for picks or take low-risk swings on young talent stuck on other rosters, it could be the beginning of a real rebuild , not just another reset.
There’s a long way to go. But fans deserve a plan, not more patchwork. Let’s hope whatever moves they make actually push things forward. Because we’ve all seen enough of the same old Jets story.
