Caleb Williams reveals secret powering Chicago Bears’ late-game heroics

Ryan Poles' most important draft selection, quarterback Caleb Williams, had arguably the best game of his young career against the Bengals.

The Chicago Bears‘ comeback ability has been one of the major storylines across the NFL over the past month.

Not only have the Bears won five of the past six games, but second-year quarterback Caleb Williams led a pair of fourth-quarter comebacks and game-winning drives as a rookie, but already has four on his resumè through the first nine games of the 2025 campaign.

While the Bears would likely prefer to run out to a lead early in games than rely on clutch moments at the end, especially against opponents like the division-rival Minnesota Vikings on Sunday afternoon, there’s little denying that Williams’ fourth-quarter dominance has become a driving force for the offense.

ESPN’s Courtney Cronin points out that not only is Williams stepping up in the clutch, but he’s also been one of the top-performing quarterbacks at the ends of halves and games across the NFL, posting the league’s second-highest QBR, at 94, in the final two moments of either half.

“You just get in that mode,” Williams told reporters this week. “Defenses have shown you throughout the game what they’ve game-planned for you, so you get into a rhythm and a flow toward the end of the game. … The mindset changes in the sense of we have no other option at that point other than to score and fight and fight and fight, and that’s what we do and what we’ve done.”

Through nine games, Williams has passed for 2,136 yards with 13 touchdowns to 14 interceptions, but in the fourth quarter of games, he’s completing just 58.8 percent of his passes for 578 yards with four touchdowns to just one interception.

It is in those final moments, though, where Williams’ mobility really shines, having rushed for 92 yards and a touchdown in the final frame, easily his most prolific quarter in the ground game, through the season’s first nine weeks.

Whether with his arm, or his legs, Williams has had some of his most impressive moments in the most vital moments of games, which the Bears will certainly take as Chicago looks to make a second-half surge towards a postseason return.
