Chicago Bears’ Caleb Williams opens up about improving key aspect of his game

NFL: New York Giants at Chicago Bears

Caleb Williams carried the Chicago Bears’ offense late in Sunday’s comeback win over the New York Giants, but only partially with his arm and clutch throws from the pocket.

While Williams passed for 220 yards and a touchdown in a 24-20 comeback victory, his and the Bears’ fourth come from behind victory of the season, it was the former Heisman Trophy winner’s mobility that stole the show late, particularly a 17-yard touchdown run that proved to be the game-winner.

Williams’ improvement from the pocket has been marked and noticable through his first 10 weeks in new Bears head coach Ben Johnson’s system.

The former No. 1 overall pick is completing 61.9 percent of his passes for 2,136 yards with 13 touchdowns to just four interceptions, but has passed for over 220 yards without an interception in each of the past two weeks.

However, it is Williams’ mobility and playmaking ability as a runner in the open field that seems to have thrown open the Bears’ offense, especially late in games the past several weeks.

“It’s been on my mind to be able to help the team in any way possible,” Williams said Wednesday. “There was space and opportunity within the game, but there are some times where a play needs to be made or a spark needs to happen. I have all the ability between my arm and legs to be able to make it happen, so whatever comes available first, whether it’s a run or a pass, I’m there to help out and try to help the team win and create a spark.”

Williams’ scrambling ability has been so impressive, that Johnson compared him to “Houdini” after Sunday’s win.

So far this season, Williams has rushed for 246 yards and three touchdowns, while surpassing 50 yards and averaging more than 7.9 yards per carry in each of the past two games.

It sure sounds like making plays on the run will be an even bigger piece of the puzzle for Williams and the Bears’ offense, moving forward, especially in tight games.

“Towards the end of the game, it’s time to go win the game and you just get in that mode,” Williams explained. “Defenses have shown you throughout the game what they’ve game-planned for you, so you get into a rhythm and a flow toward the end of the game, and the mindset changes in the sense of we have no other option at that point other than to score and fight and fight and fight, and that’s what we do and what we’ve done.
