Chicago Bears special teams coordinator gives vow ahead of week 10

The Chicago Bears’ special team unit has been a major problem this season. To be straight up, the special teams unit has been flat out horrible.

During week 9’s thriller against the Cincinnati Bengals, the special teams unit costed the Bears in many different ways. On the opening kickoff of the game, the unit gave up a 94 yard kick return touchdown. Kicker Cairo Santos was inaccurate yet again, missing a 47 yard field goal thankfully to be bailed out due to a hold call. Santos then missed another kick to end the first half.

To top it off, the kickoff and return teams continued to struggle badly. The special teams unit had constant holding and block in the back penalties throughout the game. Kick returner Devin Duvernay has rarely gone past the 25 yard line on nearly every return as well.

The Bears have been flat out terrible on kickoff coverage all year. Two weeks ago during the loss to the Ravens, the team gave up an average of 30 yards per return. This has led to Bears fans calling for the job of special teams coordinator Richard Hightower.

When asked about the Bears’ struggles on special teams, the Bears coach vowed that these mistakes will be cleaned up.

In a post on X from Fox 32’s Cassie Carlson, Hightower said that the team are “working night and day to get it all cleaned up”

Hightower proceeded to say, “I will bust my ass and they will too.”

The Bears’ special teams unit needs to get this fixed as soon as possible. With how bad this unit has become, other teams will take advantage of it. If changes do not happen, these mistakes can ultimately cost the Bears some games.
