Chicago White Sox GM Chris Getz acquires more talent in trades with the Red Sox and Rays
The Chicago White Sox enter the offseason needing to add veteran players to their major league roster to help their young core grow.

After general manager Chris Getz flipped-flopped on whether the White Sox would sign free agents past the 2026 season, the White Sox have kicked off their offseason by making a couple of trades with the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays.

Though the jury is still out on what Getz will do in free agency, he has shown his willingness to acquire under-the-radar talent through the trade market. Getz on Tuesday made a shrewd trade with the Red Sox to acquire left-hander Chris Murphy in exchange for minor league catcher Ronny Hernandez.

A former sixth-round pick of the Red Sox in the 2019 MLB Draft out of the University of San Diego, Murphy will add to the White Sox bullpen, which was a thorn in their side in 2025. In 23 games with the Red Sox, Murphy had a 3-0 record with a 3.12 ERA and struck out 30 batters in 34.2 innings.
However, Murphy’s one flaw has been his lack of command, having 20 walks (one intentional walk) for a 5.2 walks per nine.
Christ Getz didn’t forget to add some position player talent in the White Sox trade with the Rays
Swapping pitching for hitting, Getz acquired two interesting position players from the Rays, sending right-handers Yoendrys Gomez and Steven Wilson to them in exchange for outfielder Everson Pereira and infielder Tanner Murray.

Murray and Pereira should be in the mix to make the White Sox Opening Day roster, given their need for outfield and infield depth.
Pereira has seen parts of two seasons in the big leagues, appearing in 50 games between the Rays and the New York Yankees and slashing .146/.227/.215 for an OPS of .465. In 78 games in Triple-A, the 24-year-old slashed .256/.359/.508 for an OPS of .868.
Murray has spent his entire professional career in the minor leagues (five seasons) and performed well in 137 games at Triple-A last year. Slashing .241/.299/.400 for an OPS of .700, Murray hit a career high 18 home runs, which could help the 26-year-old to win a job next season.
