Forgotten costs of free agency could steer Cubs’ offseason
The Chicago Cubs will have some work to do this offseason in order to retool their roster. With star Kyle Tucker hitting free agency and likely to sign elsewhere, along with much of the bullpen not locked up for 2026, expect several external additions. With that being said, attention typically turns to high profile names available, such as Kyle Schwarber, but forgotten costs in free agency, along with the financial landscape of Major League Baseball, could steer the Cubs’ offseason in another direction.
Forgotten costs of free agency could steer the Chicago Cubs offseason

Once the offseason officially begins, decisions on qualifying offers will be made. While more of a formality in order to ensure compensation later, Chicago surely will extend the $22.025 million offer to Tucker. Regardless of contract length, if he signs elsewhere, the Cubs would then be compensated in the form of an additional 2026 MLB Draft pick after the Competitive Balance Round B, which is likely to be in the mid 70s.
For a team like Chicago, whose payroll is in the upper half of the league, but not anywhere close to touching what top teams such as the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, and New York Yankees spend, getting compensation in the form of a top 100 draft pick is crucial to help keep the organization’s prospect talent deep.
That being said, if the Cubs were to sign a free agent who has a qualifying offer tag attached to him, they would lose a draft pick in the form of their second-highest selection, as well as $500,000 from their international bonus pool for the upcoming signing period. Should they sign two qualified free agents, they would also forfeit their third-highest pick.
All of this could ultimately push the Cubs’ offseason strategy toward making upgrades through trades, being selective on who they sign in free agency, or pursuing top talent from Japan aiming to join Major League Baseball. Maintaining draft capital and strengthening organizational depth are two things the front office has to take into consideration this offseason, and will have an impact towards their approach.
