Anthony Rizzo considering return to baseball after Team Italy inquiry
Anthony Rizzo’s baseball story might not be over just yet. The former Chicago Cubs first baseman, who officially stepped away from Major League Baseball following the 2024 season, is reportedly considering a return to the field as part of Team Italy’s roster for the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Rizzo last represented Team Italy in the 2013 WBC as his grandparents were born in that country.

Rizzo, who is currently 36 years old, retired after a 14-season career that saw him become one of the defining players in Cubs history. He was a three-time All-Star, a World Series champion in 2016, and a four-time Gold Glove winner.
According to WSCR’s Inside the Clubhouse, Team Italy general manager Ned Colletti personally reached out to Rizzo, inviting him to participate in the international tournament this coming spring. Colletti, a seasoned MLB executive, said he discussed the opportunity with Rizzo months ago. “Even if it’s a pinch-hitting role or something like that, I’d love to have you,” Colletti shared, noting that Rizzo told him he would think about it.

While Rizzo has not yet made a decision on the WBC invitation, a yes would make for a remarkable comeback that could add one more chapter to an already storied career.
