Bulls head coach Billy Donovan warns faster pace is taking a physical toll on NBA players

Recently, worries have mounted over whether faster-paced games and more possessions are fueling injuries in the NBA. Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan has weighed in, expressing concern about the toll on players’ health.

Donovan shared his perspective on Monday ahead of the Bulls’ matchup with the Minnesota Timberwolves after speaking with Sam Smith of NBA.com.

“I do think it’s a factor. One is that the more possessions there are, the more opportunities for collision, and when you consider contact injuries and certainly the number of minutes and the pace and speed of the game, probably led to some soft tissue issues. So I think that’s a fair statement,” remarked the Bulls head coach.

In simple terms, added possessions force players to do more physically. Each touch brings extra sprinting, jumping, cutting, and sudden changes of direction, all of which increase stress on the body. That workload hits the legs hardest, especially the hamstrings and quads. LeBron James offers a clear example, as he missed the opening four weeks of the season while dealing with sciatica, an injury rooted in the lower body.

As the season winds down, injuries have taken a heavy toll on the Bulls. At one point, the Bulls listed as many as 11 players on the injury report, draining their depth and fueling a prolonged losing stretch. Absences from Josh Giddey, Coby White, Nikola Vucevic, and Ayo Dosunmu proved especially damaging, as each plays a central role in how the team operates. Giddey’s absence stood out most, given how much the offense flows through him.

ll and ranks second in the NBA with seven triple-doubles, trailing only Nikola Jokic, who has 16. Despite dealing with a right ankle sprain, Giddey is expected to play Monday.
