Chicago Bears’ Ben Johnson sends offense warning after loss to Packers

Ben Johnson has done a terrific job being able to adapt to the flow of the game in recent wins for the Bears.

After falling to the NFC’s No. 7 spot after being the No. 1 team before losing 28-21 to the Green Bay Packers, the Chicago Bears need to beat the 3-10 Cleveland Browns to keep pace for the playoffs in an ultra-competitive conference.

Following a home game against the Browns, the 9-4 Bears will host the Green Bay Packers, travel to play the 9-4 San Francisco 49ers and host the 8-5 Detroit Lions to finish the regular season.

On Monday, Chicago head coach Ben Johnson sent a warning to the offense, saying the team needed to start faster if they wanted to keep up with the better teams in the league.

“Offensively, we need to start faster than what we did,” Johnson said, via the Bears. “Obviously, 71 yards in the first half wasn’t good enough, only three points on five possessions. Defensively, [we] gave up too many explosives. And then special teams-wise, I didn’t feel like our kickoff or kickoff return units played like they’re capable of doing.

“We dug ourselves into a hole. Credit to the guys that came through. Made it a game there in the second half, but just wasn’t enough when you’re facing a good team on the road.”

The Packers took a 14-3 lead into halftime, but Chicago was able to make it a close game in the second half before ultimately failing to finish late in the fourth quarter.

Penalties are a problem

Johnson noted penalties continue to be a problem for the offense.

“When you play good teams on the road, every little thing matters,” Johnson said. “All the details matter. We start off on offense with two penalties in the first two drives and we don’t overcome them. We just didn’t start well enough. You’ve got to utilize all 60 minutes of your brand of football.”

The Bears wil have a big home game on Sunday, and they’ll need to clean some things up before playing the Packers in Week 16.
