Cubs missed on top-tier reliever who wanted to play in Chicago
Fans continue to wait for the Chicago Cubs to make an aggressive push during the MLB offseason. To this point, there has been nothing to get excited about.
Once again, Jed Hoyer and the front office seem to be far too passive to make a sizable move. That could still change, but there is some frustration beginning to mount within the fan base.
Right off the bat in free agency, it was reported that the Cubs were involved in the free agency talks with star pitcher Dylan Cease. They weren’t willing to pay what the Toronto Blue Jays ended up paying him. Now, a new report has come out about a player who wanted to play for Chicago, but didn’t get the offer needed to do so.
According to a report from Bruce Levine of 670 The Score, relief pitcher Devin Williams wanted to play for the Cubs. He ultimately ended up signing with the New York Mets because Chicago was not willing to offer him a good enough contract.
So far this offseason, it has been made clear that the Cubs would like to add a starting pitcher and another reliever after landing Phil Maton early on. Williams could have been a perfect fit for Chicago. Instead, the team watched him sign with the Mets instead of getting aggressive.
Williams had a rough 2025 season with the New York Yankes. However, he was elite for the Milwaukee Brewers before that.

Just two years ago during the 2024 MLB season with the rival Brewers, Williams appeared in 22 games and compiled a 1-0 record to go along with a 1.25 ERA, a 0.97 WHIP, a 3.5 K/BB ratio, 14 saves, and just one blown save.
Back in 2023, he put up even bigger numbers. He pitched in 61 games, racking up an 8-3 record, a 1.53 ERA, a 0.92 WHIP, a 3.1 K/BB ratio, 36 saves, and just four blown saves.
Needless to say, Williams is capable of being an elite reliever and closer. The Cubs simply didn’t seem to have enough interest in signing him.
Expect to continue hearing rumors and reports about Chicago as the offseason moves forward. Hopefully, Hoyer and company will be able to get some deals done that move the needle for the Cubs as potential World Series contenders in 2026.
