Notre Dame’s post-snub behavior could backfire spectacularly

Marcus Freeman, Notre Dame

Notre Dame reacted very negatively to the perceived College Football Playoff snub it endured. After being ranked within the playoff field until the very end to be swapped out for Miami, the Fighting Irish were upset. They ripped the ACC, revealed a guaranteed spot for the future, and declined to play a bowl game. Now, that all could backfire in the future.

If Notre Dame places within the top 12, which is more or less the range to make the College Football Playoff, in the final rankings next year, they will make it into the field. They were ranked 11th, but missed out due to Tulane and James Madison getting in.

But because of this guarantee, many potential opponents no longer want to play the Irish. The Irish are getting, per Dan Wolken, “preferential treatment” for the playoff, and teams don’t want to potentially help bolster their resume.

Because Notre Dame does not play in a conference, a chosen status that may eventually (and probably already has) really hurt the team, they are not guaranteed any good teams. If they joined the SEC, for example, they’d be able to play some really good teams, like Texas, Alabama, LSU, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, or Georgia.

But since they have to schedule their own games outside of a conference, other teams must agree. And per Wolken, it sounds like some good teams might prefer not to play them since a win in those contests would help Notre Dame work into the top 12 and thereby guarantee a spot in the playoff.

Jeremiyah Love
Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love (4) makes a heart sign after scoring a touchdown in the first half of a NCAA football game against Syracuse at Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2025, in South Bend.

The Irish played a few ranked opponents, including Texas A&M and Miami, to open the year. They lost those two games, and both teams made the playoffs. Had they won one, this would be a different conversation.

But now, moving forward, it may be harder to schedule ranked opponents like that. They’ll probably still play USC, which is often ranked, but getting the big schools to potentially pad their resume might be a little harder now because of how they’ve looked to other ADs in the wake of the committee’s decision.
