OTL: Ravens-Steelers Effectively a Playoff Game
It seems that each week my Out to Lunch starts with some variation of “Just when you thought…” And yet, here we are again!
Just when you thought the Ravens had gotten rolling and were playoff bound, the wheels came falling off against Cincinnati. In my eyes, this was an unacceptable performance.
This week’s power rankings reflect that:

I’ve received a few DMs asking me why I’m so negative about the #Ravens.
Simply put, they’ve punched under their talent 6 years in a row and I’m exhausted.
But they still have talent, and you never know when they’ll right the ship. Just hard to argue that it will happen! https://t.co/zZ10Pxf3XF
— Cole Jackson (@ColeJacksonFB) December 1, 2025
A huge reason for that sentiment is the upcoming schedule. Despite Baltimore ripping off five straight victories, fans are looking ahead to dates with New England and Green Bay, a rematch with the Bengals, and, of course, two battles with Pittsburgh. Without a doubt, it’s going to be tough:

John Harbaugh’s December track record is strong, and as a matter of fact, so is QB Lamar Jackson’s:
Lamar is 20-3 (.870) in December. Hope the trend continues lol.
For comparison:
Mahomes: 26-6 (.813)
Allen: 21-9 (.700)
Burrow: 10-3 (.769)
Brady: 71-19 (.789)
Brees: 43-35 (.551)
Rodgers: 42-18 (.700)
Montana: 36-11 (.766)
Young: 29-16 (.644)
P Manning: 49-21 (.700)— Ronrosco (@Ronrosco2) December 2, 2025
Still, Jackson is in the midst of perhaps the worst stretch of his 8-year career. Whether that’s due to injury, a poor O-Line, questionable play calling, trying to do too much, or a combination of it all, that’s where we are.

It’s crazy, but just a few months ago Jackson appeared to be having another career year:
We were so close to witness the greatest season by a Quarterback EVER https://t.co/TV0s903zZG pic.twitter.com/AAQURnYHe2
— ً (@goatevar) December 2, 2025
Importantly, it’s worth noting that Jackson’s Thanksgiving night may have looked a lot different had the rest of the team helped him out:
Lamar Jackson rushing hasn’t been the same since returning from injury, but his Week 13 did include:
-Isaiah Likely fumbles away a 44-yard TD
-Zay Flowers iffy OPI on 36-yard TD
-Two near-miss potential chunk gains to DeVontez Walker pic.twitter.com/DLtZh5MRrM— Ian Hartitz (@Ihartitz) December 1, 2025
If players other than Lamar execute. We have three more touchdowns on the board.
How about the defense? Sure, they did a nice job dealing with first half turnovers. The game was 19-14 at one point. Make a stop
Or does the it’s a long season, guys are tired and hurt thing only… https://t.co/Gd7L9aTR2o

While it’s no excuse for the fumbles and plethora of missed throws, it’s something Ravens fans can hold onto. So how do we get back to the offense of old?
Other than protecting the ball and executing the fundamentals, it starts with getting back to the ground game. Pittsburgh was gashed by Buffalo (and by Baltimore late last season), and is lacking some of its top talent along the D-Line:
Derrick Harmon is OUT again this week with the knee injury.
A big blow for the Steelers run defense. Harmon was drafted especially with the wild card loss to the Ravens in mind.
— Brooke Pryor (@bepryor) December 2, 2025
Mike Tomlin on how January’s Wild Card loss in Baltimore influenced the way Pittsburgh built its 2025 roster:
“The acquisition of bigs. You saw an emphasis in the Draft around big people. … You can’t run out of bigs. If you run out of bigs in AFC North ball, you’re running on… pic.twitter.com/zH5r1H0y18
— Bobby Trosset (@bobbybaltim0re) December 2, 2025
Overall, Pittsburgh’s defense is lackluster this season, and Baltimore has to capitalize:

Believe it or not, the mood in Pittsburgh is worse than the mood in Baltimore. Lock in Ravens. Lock in fans.
— Huddle It Up Films (@HuddleItUpFilms) December 1, 2025
For me, that means giving it to King Henry early and often. On Thanksgiving, OC Todd Monken got away from the run despite having a lead, something we’ve seen all too often. This week, that can’t happen:
Both Derrick Henry and Keaton Mitchell were on the scoresheet, but it was Rasheen Ali who led the RB corps in snap count.
Coming up against one of the worst run defences in the NFL, the Baltimore Ravens only managed 123 yards on the ground!
Pure Todd Monken negligence. pic.twitter.com/UuZzzQaqwv

Derrick Henry has gotta have 30 carries on Sunday
I am not joking

Alongside that, Monken needs to get back to his creative ways. While Dev Panchwagh refers to the offense in entirety in his post below, much of what this creativity does is open up the run game. That’s especially true when Pat Ricard is being moved around:
If the #Ravens are going to turn it around on offense, we need more creativity & better problem solving from Monken.
Watching the 2023 games over again, & there’s a big difference.
He used Ricard as an extra pass pro blocker. He used pump fakes & misdirection in the red zone.
— Dev Panchwagh (@devpanchwagh) December 2, 2025
One way or another, Ravens fans will hope to see more of this on Sunday:
Watching some of these Bills duo runs back. Sheesh. pic.twitter.com/tX76CrKzDk
— Mina Kimes (@minakimes) December 1, 2025
Either way, what’s particularly intriguing about this matchup is the fact that both teams seem to be at a crossroads:
A Steelers team that lacks that Steelers identity traveling to Baltimore to face a Ravens team that lack that Ravens identity. Going to be very interesting to see what happens on Sunday
— Josh Berman (@NextNetworkJosh) December 1, 2025
And normally, a post like that would refer to a game of two teams with nothing to play for. Instead, the next two Ravens/Steelers games are likely to determine the AFC North Champion:
The Ravens-Steelers game on Sunday has more playoff leverage than any game so far this season, but you probably knew that.
Based on our sim:
Ravens win: Ravens 70%, Steelers 23%
Steelers win: Steelers 75%, Ravens 21%— Aaron Schatz
(@ASchatzNFL) December 2, 2025
There’s a lot to figure out this week, but here’s hoping the Ravens can do it!
