Bears vs. Rams weather forecast: How Chicago may get an assist from the weather vs. Matthew Stafford

Soldier Field has the potential to be the ultimate homefield advantage for the Chicago Bears, in Sunday night’s NFC Divisional Playoff game against Matthew Stafford and the high-flying Los Angeles Rams.

Stafford is in the running for the MVP award, and is fresh off posting a comeback victory and game-winning drive in Charlotte against the Carolina Panthers to advance to the second round of the NFL Playoffs, but the Rams’ offense may be walking into a completely different environment on Sunday night.

Put bluntly, it is going to be cold on Sunday in Chicago.

According to The Weather Channel, the high temperature on Sunday will only touch 18 degrees, and the low could drop to 2 degrees on Sunday night.

Potentially worse for the Rams, and Los Angeles’ suspect special teams units, the forecast calls for 20-to-30 mile per hour winds, with gusts possibly exceeding 40 miles per hour.

There’s even a chance that this becomes one of the coldest games on record, with the “feels like” temperature dipping to minus-six degrees.

Rams head coach Sean McVay is brushing off concerns about the weather, as his team prepares to walk into a Midwest icebox.

“You know [how the ball feels in the cold], but last year was a great example, we had two really cold games,” McVay told reporters on Wednesday, asked if the forecast will have any impact on his offensive planning. “Fortunately, [quarterback Matthew Stafford] has played in these conditions. So it doesn’t change. There’s a couple things you have to be mindful of, but you start talking about wind, rain, and how that affects your footing, stuff like that, we always kind of adjust and adapt.

“[The Bears] have got to be able to play in those same sort of elements—they have a little more experience, but we’re not going to allow that to be an excuse. I think you do have to have a feel, but I think the way that our guys play, I think it suits us well in any sort of conditions, and that’s kind of what we’ve always said.”

Chicago has the experience of living in the elements, and the ability to practice in them this week, unlike the Rams, whose facility is located in Southern California. We’ll find out soon enough whether those advantages pay off or make a meaningful difference.
