Chicago Bears HC Ben Johnson rips into offense after loss to Lions

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson was adamant that he wanted to beat the Detroit Lions in Week 18, choosing to keep his starters in the game instead of resting them (like the Philadelphia Eagles did on Sunday) after winning the division in Week 17.

On Sunday, the Bears came out flat on both sides of the ball, trailing 16-0 at the start of the fourth quarter. Chicago scored two touchdowns and converted two two-point conversions, but Lions kicker Jake Bates made a 42-yard field goal as time expired to sweep Chicago in the regular season with a 19-16 win in front of 57,036 fans at Soldier Field.

During his postgame news conference, Johnson told reporters that he lit into his offensive players after the loss.

“We just can’t dig ourselves in a hole like that, you know,” Johnson said. “And I was disappointed with the offense as a whole. I let those guys know that, and we’ll be better for it. We’ll address it, we’ll get those things cleaned up, and we’ll be better for it.”

Fortunately for the Bears, the Eagles backups lost to the Washington Commanders 24-17, giving Chicago the No. 2 seed in the NFC. The Bears will host the Green Bay Packers in the wild card.

More News: Lions could be plotting big-time revenge on Ben Johnson

Johnson said that the Bears didn’t have time to dwell on a sloppy loss to the Lions with the Packers contest ahead of them.

“We’re turning the page though,” Johnson said. “We got the number two seed, we got a home game next week, and we got a new season on the horizon, and so our guys should be reinvigorated by that.

“I know I certainly am. I’m looking forward to the opportunity and all that that entails, and the opportunity to go one and one this week.”

The Bears played a vanilla game plan on offense and defense. Frankly, it was confusing to see the starters on the field with the “easy” game plan that the staff installed this week.

Chicago’s players didn’t seem too energized to play a fairly meaningless game against Detroit. The Bears will need to see more willpower against Green Bay next weekend.
