Chicago Bears vs. Rams: Matthew Stafford and Sean McVay’s Bizarre Way of Preparing for the Cold
The Chicago Bears vs. Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Divisional Playoffs has the potential to be among the coldest postseason games in NFL history.
Forecasts are calling for a game-time temperature hovering near 2 degrees, with wind gusts potentially touching 40 miles per hour or more. That kind of weather could shape up to be a legitimate homefield advantage for the Bears, against Sean McVay’s club that practices in sunny Southern California, and is quarterbacked by 37-year-old Matthew Stafford.
Unlike Caleb Williams, Colston Loveland, Kevin Byard, and the Bears, the Rams don’t have the luxury of stepping outside to practice in the conditions they’re likely to face Sunday night at Soldier Field.
Rams’ Sean McVay, Matthew Stafford have a bizarre way to prepare for Bears in the Cold

As Sunday night’s game approaches, Stafford and McVay have an unorthodox way of preparing for the elements.
ESPN spoke to several current and former players and coaches about how they prepare for the coldest games of the season, and it turns out, McVay and Stafford each wear a scuba suit on game day.
“Yeah, I throw on a damn scuba suit underneath,” McVay said last month, reminiscing about a Week 16 game at the New York Jets, where the wind chill was 6 degrees. “I got that trick from Matthew. I said, ‘This thing is awfully snug, but it is nice and warm.’ I don’t do much. My mom always gets on me about not wearing a hat because my little ears and my hands get so frozen.”
Meanwhile, the Bears have thrived in the chaos of the cold, posting a pair of comeback wins over the Packers, in frigid prime time conditions over the past month.
Whether a scuba suit can actually bridge the gap between balmy Southern California and a sub-zero Soldier Field remains to be seen. In a game where the elements are expected to be as much of an opponent as the players themselves, the Rams’ unorthodox survival tactics highlight just how deep the Bears’ home-field advantage is.
