Chicago Cubs infielder listed as potential trade candidate ahead of 2026 season
The Chicago Cubs have been a significant factor throughout the offseason as they added Alex Bregman to bolster the offense heading into 2026. With their addition of Bregman, they could begin to move off of one infielder as a result of having too many players for the infield positions. Fangraphs’ roster resource page has the team starting with Matt Shaw on the bench as a result of the signing. Let’s take a closer look at one player they could be shopping around before the season begins.
The Chicago Cubs could be trading Nico Hoerner before the season starts

MLB’s Mark Feinsand wrote an article highlighting some of the top trade candidates, not including Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal, and mentioned Nico Hoerner on his list. Below is his reasoning for putting the middle infielder in the article:
“Hoerner is in the final year of a three-year, $35 million extension, set to earn $12 million this season before becoming a free agent next winter. The Cubs signed Alex Bregman to a five-year, $175 million contract to play third base, giving Chicago a surplus in the infield. Matt Shaw will likely assume a super-utility role, but the Cubs could look to trade Hoerner instead and slot Shaw in at second base, giving president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer options as he looks to fine-tune Chicago’s roster in an effort to win the club’s first NL Central title since 2020.”
Hoerner has been with the Cubs since being drafted in the first round of the 2018 MLB Draft by them. Last season, he finished with a .297/.345/.394 slash line with seven home runs, 61 RBI, 89 runs scored, and 29 stolen bases on 35 attempts in 156 games. Hoerner would finish 19th in the National League MVP race and won the Gold Glove at second base for the second time in three years. It will be intriguing to see if the Cubs decide to trade him away and if they do, what return they would get for a solid player on the last year of his contract.
