Cap-strapped Chicago Bears could shockingly get chance at Giants linebacker
The Chicago Bears are going to face some difficult decisions in the weeks ahead, to get under the salary cap, and general manager Ryan Poles may need to revamp the linebacking corps as a result.
If Poles and the Bears do move on from veteran Tremaine Edmunds, which would be one of the most cost-effective moves Chicago could make, there could be an ideal replacement with upside about to shake loose from another team looking to free up spending flexibility before the new league year begins.
Could Chicago Bears sign Giants linebacker Bobby Okereke?
According to Dan Duggan of The Athletic, the Giants could be poised to move on from linebacker Bobby Okereke.
“The Giants can create $9 million in cap savings while eating $5.5 million in dead money,” Duggan writes of Okereke. “If they cut him this offseason. A captain during each of his three seasons in New York, Okereke plays every snap as the leader of the defense. But the 29-year-old’s performance has declined, so the savings from cutting him could be spent on an upgrade.”
It remains to be seen how much of Okereke’s sharp decline in play was a result of a poor scheme in New York, or age catching up to him.
However, the $40 million linebacker still produced 78 tackles with one sack, while tying a career-high with two interceptions this past season.
Whether adding Okereke as a move to upgrade the linebacking corps alongside a player like Edmunds, or to replace the veteran, he’s exactly the kind of veteran who has the potential to be an upgrade for the Bears’ defense in 2026.
