Chicago Bears could move on veteran defensive lineman in free agency
The Chicago Bears front seven struggled to generate a pass rush in Dennis Allen’s first season as the defensive coordinator.

The problem started well before Allen arrived in Chicago. The Bears have not been able to generate sacks since general manager Ryan Poles got rid of pass-rushers in his first offseason for cap reasons.
Chicago has tried to fill out the defensive line via trades and free agency. Defensive end Montez Sweat is the unit’s best player, but he needs more help to get the best value out of having him on the roster.
The Bears are expected to add help on the defensive line this offseason, and that means a veteran could be on his way out.
Alyssa Baberi of USA Today named defensive tackle Andrew Billings as a player the Bears could let walk in free agency.
“Andrew Billings was one of GM Ryan Poles’ best free agent signings back in 2023, and he quickly earned a two-year extension after proving his worth in run defense along a questionable defensive line,” she wrote.
“With the addition of veteran Grady Jarrett, alongside Gervon Dexter, Billings found himself relegated to DT3 and declined as a run defender in 2025. Defensive tackle is expected to be a top need for Chicago this offseason, so moving on from Billings in free agency feels like an easy move.”
Time for the Chicago Bears to move on from Andrew Billings?

Billings appeared in 42 games and started 39 for the Bears. He recorded 31 total tackles, one sack, and six tackles for loss in 2025. He’s been a key part of the run defense in Chicago.
Last year, Bears head coach Ben Johnson named Billings as a player that gave him nightmares when he was the offensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions.
The Bears hope defensive tackles Shemar Turner and Gervon Dexter play a bigger role in 2026. Grady Jarrett was also a big addition in free agency last season.
Billings, 30, would be a huge loss for the Bears defense. Still, Chicago needs to add younger players at defensive tackle and defensive end this offseason, and it would make sense to part ways with the veteran as they find a homegrown talent.
